Description
Mnestra of Misthaven needs three golden apples to ransom sailors trapped in a winter that will not end — she says the mist named the apples and she will not explain further. She provides the Sunset Shears and one hard rule: do not kill Ladon, the hundred-eyed dragon who guards the Hesperides' orchard. A dead guardian calls Hera's full gaze westward, and that ends worse than failing the heist.
The island watches shadows before it watches bodies. Three terraces of ward-lanterns, thorn-nymphs, and a dragon who is never fully asleep. The Shears can trim one ward-vine for a free pass, cut one dream-vine from Ladon to steal a legendary reaction, and harvest each apple without alerting the bough. Recruiting Aegle, the doubting Hesperid, makes everything quieter.
Enc. 1: The Shears can quietly trim a ward-vine for one automatic success in the infiltration challenge. They also grant advantage on one Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) or Wisdom (Perception) check involving orchard wards.
Enc. 2: Each apple requires an Action and DC 15 Sleight of Hand to harvest — automatic success with the Shears. The social route (4 successes, DC 16) earns ten quiet minutes at the bough; each apple harvested during combat triggers thunder/fire noise that adds +1 wake token.
Enc. 3 (primary): Cut one dream-vine on Ladon (Action, adjacent): Ladon loses a legendary reaction and cannot awaken fully for 1 round. This is the turning-point use — combine it with the Ram's Bell equivalent to create a window where three apples can still be recovered from a fully-woken dragon scenario. Aegle can erase one wake token if a PC spends an action protecting her from accusation.
Key NPCs
Mnestra of Misthaven
Mnestra · Quest Giver · Chaotic Good — An oracle-smuggler who has been running contraband out of the mist-crossings for fifteen years and has the moral framework of someone who has never needed to justify themselves to anyone who could make it stick. She needs the apples to ransom sailors trapped in the wrong season. She will not explain the mist's instructions further. Secret: her map was bought from a Hesperid who wants one sister discredited, not harmed. That Hesperid is Aegle. Mnestra knows this, did not disclose it to the party in advance, and will not disclose it unless directly asked. DC 15 Insight to notice she knows more about the Hesperides' internal politics than she admitted. DC 17 to get the full truth out of her.
Aegle, Doubting Hesperid
Aegle · Optional Ally · Neutral — One of three sisters who tend the Hesperides' orchard at the edge of Oceanus. She has been tending the same trees for so long that the boundary between devotion and resentment has become unclear to her. She wants the theft blamed on her — specifically, she wants one sister accused so the arrangement can be revisited. She will not say this directly; she will say she has doubts about the taboo, and wait to see if anyone is perceptive enough to ask the right question. Secret: she sold the map to Mnestra deliberately. She wants out of the arrangement. Recruiting her requires exposing the false serpent tracks without blaming her personally, or swearing the three-apple limit. DC 15 Persuasion; DC 12 if a PC first notices and names the contradiction between her stated loyalty and her actual actions without accusation.
Ladon, Hundred-Eyed Dragon
Ladon · Guardian · True Neutral — A serpentine dragon with a hundred eyes along its body, most of them always open. It does not sleep fully; it cycles through phases of awareness. It is not malicious. It is not negotiable. It is the guardian of the Hesperides' orchard and it fulfills that function with the totality of its being. Killing it calls Hera's gaze — immediately and permanently — on the party and on Misthaven. The encounter is designed for theft and escape. The Shears can cut a dream-vine to steal one legendary reaction. The bell equivalent can make it Drowsy for 1 round. Neither fully stops it; they create windows.
Major Beats
- Misthaven — The Commission. Mnestra delivers the Sunset Shears and the bronze-leaf handout. She names the three apples by the specific branch-marks the mist described and gives the one hard rule. Investigation DC 15: the serpent tracks at the orchard's edge are planted — someone on the inside wants the blame redistributed. DC 17: three Hesperid sisters, three different opinions on whether Ladon's arrangement should continue. DC 18: Aegle sold the map.
- Enc. 1 — The Orchard That Notices. The island watches shadows first. Six successes before three failures at DC 15 (Stealth, Nature, Perception, Deception, Performance). Failures wake a Branchbound Watcher; two failures light a ward-lantern visible in Enc. 3. Aegle can be recruited by exposing the false tracks without blaming her or swearing the three-apple limit.
- Enc. 2 — Sisters at the Golden Bough. The bough platform over black water. Social route: 4 successes DC 16 earns ten quiet minutes. Combat uses Thorn-Nymphs and Dream-Moths; thunder or fire adds wake tokens. Each apple is an Action and DC 15 Sleight of Hand, or automatic with the Shears. Aegle can erase a wake token if a PC protects her from accusation.
- Enc. 3 — Ladon Opens One Hundred Eyes (Deadly). The escape route. Ladon is awake or awakening; wake tokens from Enc. 2 determine starting conditions. The Shears cut one dream-vine — one legendary reaction lost, one round of not-fully-awake. Speed vs. mercy vs. bargaining under a hundred-eyed gaze. Get out with three apples.
- Resolution. Mnestra receives the apples and will not explain what happens next. The island folds back into sunset. Aegle, if she came with the party, does not return — she is in the mist, which is something entirely different from being in the orchard.

Act 1 — The Orchard That Notices
The island has no harbor — the ship beaches on a stepped terrace of warm stone under a copper sky that has been sunset for longer than it should be. The air smells of ripe apples and something hotter beneath it: ozone, or the attention of something vast. Mirror pools along the first terrace show the party their reflections, then show something else — shadows offset by half a second, watching from inside the water.
Encounter 1 — The Orchard That Notices
Overview
Land under a copper sunset and cross talking terraces before the island decides the crew are thieves.
🗺 Terrain
Stepped beach, mirror pools, cypress ladders, and three ward-lantern paths into the orchard.
Encounter Roster (Hard)
- 2× Branchbound Watcher (CR 4 · 1,100 XP each) on combat wake
- +1 Watcher per failed stealth success after the first alarm
XP Budget (Hard)
- Stealth track (no combat): skill challenge only
- 2× 1,100 = 2,200 XP if one failure wakes patrol
- 3× Watchers + lit lantern ≈ 3,300 XP — add Dream-Moth from Enc. 2 only if party charges through alarms
Mechanics
- Stealth Challenge (primary path): Run 6 successes before 3 failures using Stealth, Nature, Perception, Deception, or Performance DC 15 — no combat if the orchard never alarms.
- Mirror Pool Misdirection (DC 14 Deception or Performance): One PC distracts a watching reflection while others cross; banks one automatic success on the stealth track.
- Social Sisters Route (setup for Enc. 2): Leave a gilt offering at the cypress ladder and speak a sister's praise (Religion or History DC 14) — Thorn-Nymphs in Enc. 2 begin indifferent unless attacked.
- A failure wakes a Branchbound Watcher; two failures wake a second Watcher and light a ward-lantern visible in Encounter 3.
- The Sunset Shears can quietly trim a ward-vine for one automatic success.
- Recruit Aegle by proving the tracks were planted or by swearing the three-apple limit.

Act 2 — Sisters at the Golden Bough
The bough platform is circular, twenty feet across, suspended over black water on braided vine-cables that are older than the island. Three apple-heavy boughs arch over it; each apple catches the sunset and holds it, warm as an ember. At the platform's edge, a harp dais. Behind thorn hedges, two sisters. One of them — Aegle, if recruited — stands slightly apart from the others, watching the party with an expression that is not quite hope.

- Aegle can erase one wake token if a PC spends an action protecting her from accusation.

Act 3 — Ladon Opens One Hundred Eyes
The exit terrace. Ladon is coiled around the base of the great tree, a hundred eyes cycling through awareness states — most of them half-open even at rest. Every ward-lantern lit in Enc. 1 or 2 is now a glowing point of light above the escape path. The dragon's head rises as the party crosses the first terrace. It knows. It has always known. The only question is whether the party can be out of reach before it decides they are worth the full attention.

Sunset Shears
Reward · Wondrous · 1/Long Rest
Mechanics. Once per short rest, you have advantage on one Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) or Wisdom (Perception) check involving orchard wards, vines, or silent theft. Appearance. Tiny bronze pruning shears warm as late afternoon, blades catching sunset even at noon.
Lore. Hesperide orchard keys, kept by careful hands that cut stems instead of throats.
Quote. "Cut the stem, not the fruit; cut the shadow, not the throat." — Sunset Shears
