Description
The party's trireme makes landfall at Amnisos just as the bronze colossus Talos, guardian of Crete, lurches to life and begins rampaging toward the coast. Talos has walked Crete's shoreline for a thousand years; its heartbeat was a comfort rather than a warning. Something has poisoned the ichor in its chest-valve, and the guardian's ancient loyalty has curdled into blind catastrophe. A burn-scarred smith at the Drowned Anchor tavern — calling himself Kadmos — presses a cold bronze nail into a player's palm before the party has finished sitting down and tells them what must be done.
The only route to the heart is inside: through a heel-hatch ground open by the colossus's own weight as it wanders the shoreline, up a vertical gear shaft through scalding steam past autonomous bronze sentinels, and into a chest-vault where corrupted ichor logic fights the shutdown sequence at every turn. The clock is the colossus itself — it reaches the harbor in eight rounds of Encounter 3. Every action spent fighting is one not spent on the valve.
Act 1: The pin vibrates faintly near Ichor-script markings. DC 13 Arcana (DC 9 with pin in hand) to recognize that the neck-rune on the Chalkotauros matches the pin's spiraling script. With this knowledge: the pin inserts into the bull's back-panel port as an Action, instantly disabling it — no further roll, no opportunity attack if the bull is already grappled or prone. Without pin: DC 15 Arcana/Investigation, provokes opportunity attack.
Act 2: At each valve station the pin resonates with the locking mechanism, granting Advantage on Investigation/Arcana (DC 10 with pin, DC 14 without). Kyros the Bronze Owl also recognizes it as a Daedalan key — displaying the pin allows Kyros to open its own alcove from inside (no roll; freeing Kyros becomes a Free Action).
Act 3: The pin is required to engage the Ichor Valve (without it, DC 20 Arcana improvisation — and success destroys the valve permanently, leaving Talos damaged). Each successful shutdown click is audible throughout the chamber. DC to counter Overcharge Core is reduced from 15 to 12 for a player holding the pin.
Handout — The Aegis Pin
Kadmos presses a cold bronze nail into a player's palm, etched with spiraling Daedalan script. Attached on a scrap of smoke-cured hide: "Seek the ichor-valve at heart or heel. Turn the pin thrice. The bronze giant will sleep, not die." See The Aegis Pin for full card.
Key NPCs
Kadmos — Quest Giver · Neutral
Kadmos presents himself as a dockside smith — soot to the elbows, a burn-scar along his left forearm that never quite healed, and the easy confidence of a craftsman who knows exactly what he built. He speaks plainly, understates his own knowledge, and deflects every compliment with dry humor. He will not go with the party ("a god's hand is heavier than it looks") and will not answer direct questions about his true identity. Secret: he is Hephaestus in mortal disguise; DC 18 Insight or divine-detecting magic reveals this. He forged Talos himself and will not let it be destroyed. RP hook: If the party mentions killing rather than shutting down the colossus, Kadmos goes quiet, sets down his cup, and says: "There is only one thing on this island that cannot be rebuilt." DC 14 Persuasion to change his mood; DC 17 to learn the pin's secondary uses from him willingly.
Ikara of Knossos — Potential Ally · Neutral Good
Ikara is an artificer-scholar and self-described descendant of the Daedalus workshop's last apprentices — a lineage she invokes more often than is comfortable in polite company. She talks fast when nervous, stops mid-sentence to revise herself, and lights up entirely when given a technical problem. She was in Amnisos to study the colossus's gait anomalies and was caught under rubble when it started moving. Secret: her schematics of Talos's interior are half-remembered — she extrapolated from a single papyrus fragment. They're mostly correct, but the ichor-valve chamber's layout is wrong in one key detail (the valve is on the chamber's west wall, not east as her sketch shows). RP hook: She will mention the wrong detail confidently unless a player specifically asks how old her source is (DC 13 Insight to notice her hesitation when pressed). In Act 3, discovering her error doesn't shake her — she recalculates instantly and directs the party correctly.
Kyros, the Bronze Owl — Potential Ally · Unaligned
Kyros is a palm-sized bronze owl construct, locked in a gear-alcove in Talos's heel shaft — placed there as an internal diagnostic by its maker, forgotten in the colossus's long dormancy. It communicates through clicks, wing-angle, and repeated head-tilts toward structural weak points. It cannot speak but can indicate yes/no and urgency. Secret: it knows the exact location of the Ichor Valve and the route to it — guiding the party to the west wall of the chamber (correcting Ikara's mistake) with unmistakable clicks if they let it lead. RP hook: A player who succeeds on a DC 14 Animal Handling or Arcana check can interpret its gestures fluently; otherwise it takes two rounds of pantomime before the party understands. If Ikara is present and they ask Kyros about the valve location, Kyros contradicts her sketch emphatically.

Major Beats
- The Drowned Anchor. Party meets Kadmos at the dockside tavern. DC 13 History: Talos is a divine construct, not a mortal's work. DC 16 Arcana: the Aegis Pin is Daedalan-era metalwork of extraordinary quality. DC 18 Insight: Kadmos's hands don't move like a working smith's — they move like an artisan who built something the size of a mountain. He hands over the pin and tells the party only what it needs to know, nothing more.
- Encounter 1 — The Bull in the Streets. Amnisos burns at the edges. A rampaging Chalkotauros — one of Talos's lesser bronze sentinels shaken loose and gone feral — smashes through the market. Scholar Ikara is pinned under a collapsed well. The party must stop the bull, rescue Ikara (who grants Advantage on later mechanism checks), and find the heel-hatch before Talos moves. Hard encounter; avoidable via neck-rune shutdown.
- The Heel-Hatch. Villagers who saw Talos grind its own heel into the shore-rock point the party to a bronze seam in the cliff face — the hatch is open just wide enough for humanoids. The air inside smells of heated copper and scorched oil. Distant rhythmic pounding from somewhere above.
- Encounter 2 — The Clockwork Ascent. A vertical gear shaft, 40 ft of spiral gantry. Twin Bronze Sentries patrol, steam vents erupt every 3 rounds. Three valve stations along the gantry can be operated to bypass the sentinels entirely. A locked alcove holds Kyros. Hard encounter; fully avoidable via valve puzzle. Hard escape penalty if failed.
- Encounter 3 — The Ichor Heart (Boss). Party descends through the torso-hatch into a circular vault. The heart pulses with corrupted ichor; bronze constructs under command of the Talos Overseer defend the valve. Three shutdown successes required within 8 rounds while fighting. Deadly encounter; clock pressure is the primary threat as much as the combat. Ikara and Kyros provide mechanical advantages.
- Resolution. Three successful clicks. Talos kneels on the shoreline, the corrupted ichor draining into the sand, dormant but intact. Kadmos, if found afterward, is simply gone — in his place a neat pile of iron tools with no maker's mark. Crete is safe. Legend acquires a new chapter.
The colossus's passage has already done its damage — Amnisos's market district is a ruin of overturned amphorae and collapsed awnings, the air thick with bronze-hot dust and the distant grinding of gears too large to see. One of Talos's lesser sentinels — a bronze bull shaken loose in the upheaval — charges through the remaining stalls, not hunting, just breaking. Somewhere in the wreckage, something is calling for help.
Encounter 1 — The Bull in the Streets
Overview
A rampaging Chalkotauros smashes through the market, one of Talos's lesser bronze sentinels shaken loose and gone feral. The scholar Ikara is pinned beneath a collapsed well nearby — a rescue target that makes the bull's aggro dangerous throughout. Party must stop the bull, save Ikara, and find the heel-hatch before Talos moves farther down the shoreline.
- Style: Urban skirmish with non-lethal shutdown option and rescue objective
- Win Condition: Stop the Chalkotauros and free Ikara before Talos clears the harbor approach
- XP Note (Hard target ≈ 10,800 adj. XP for 6×L10): Base encounter as written ≈ 1,100 XP. To reach Hard: add 2× Bronze Sentries responding to the disturbance (900 XP) and set the bull to Hard stats (see Scaling). Total adjusted: ~7,200 XP with Hard scaling active — a challenging skirmish with the rescue objective providing additional pressure.
Creatures (Baseline)
- 1× Chalkotauros (Bronze Bull) — CR 6 (2,300 XP)
- 2× Bronze Sentry — CR 2 (450 XP each) — arrive Round 2 from a side alley
Hard Additions
- Bull begins with Trampling Charge active (no recharge roll needed Round 1)
- Sentries arrive Round 1 instead of Round 2
- DC 14 Dexterity save at start of each round or difficult terrain catches a PC
🗺 Terrain & Features
Amnisos market district — 80×60 ft
- Overturned carts and fishing nets (difficult terrain, half cover)
- Collapsed market stalls (difficult terrain, blocks sightlines in 20ft sections)
- Collapsed well pins Ikara (DC 13 Athletics to clear, or DC 12 Medicine to stabilize after freeing)
- Active forge brazier — knocked over, 5-ft fire hazard zone (DC 13 Dex save or 2d6 fire if adjacent)
- Salt-fish barrels — thrown into the bull's path as an Action creates a 10×10 ft difficult terrain zone for 2 rounds
Hard (APL10 baseline): Bull HP 114 (upgraded), 2× Bronze Sentries arrive Round 2, Trampling Charge Recharge 5–6.
Harder/Deadly (APL11+): Bull HP 140, sentries arrive Round 1, add 1× Keraunos Legionnaire in the alley.
Mechanics
- Neck-Rune Shutdown (DC 15 Arcana/Investigation; DC 9 with Aegis Pin): An adjacent creature spends an Action to locate and press the kill-rune behind the bull's left horn. Succeeds instantly — the bull goes inert with a sound like a great door closing. Provokes an opportunity attack unless the bull is already prone or grappled. Reduced to DC 9 if the party has already identified the Aegis Pin's script connection (DM note block).
- Distract with Feed/Scent (DC 14 Animal Handling or Nature): Locate a grain sack or dockside offal barrel and place it on the ground ahead of the bull. Success diverts its movement this round and the next (it attacks the food source). Frees a full round for the rescue team.
- Channel into a dead-end alley (DC 15 Persuasion to direct crowd + DC 13 Athletics to herd): The market's north end has a collapsed loading yard forming a natural pen. Herding the bull in requires 2 successes on consecutive rounds; on the second, a PC adjacent to the makeshift gate can attempt a DC 14 Athletics to slam it shut. Bull takes 3 rounds to break out.
- Trampling Charge (Recharge 5–6): Bull moves up to its full speed (40 ft) in a straight line; every creature in its path must make a DC 16 STR save or be knocked prone and take a bonus Gore attack. The party can use the terrain to limit charge lanes.
- Aggro Shift: Each failed rescue attempt while the bull is within 30 ft draws its full attention toward the rescuer — bull uses its next move toward the rescuer regardless of other targets.
- Sentries (arrive Round 2): Two Bronze Sentries march in from the harbor lane. They target the nearest non-prone creature. They do not pursue into buildings and cannot be shut down via the neck-rune method (their disable requires the valve mechanism — see Encounter 2).
Resolution
- Villagers direct the party to Talos's fallen heel-hatch, the only way inside the colossus.
Creature Cards
Chalkotauros (Bronze Bull)
Large Construct, Unaligned · CR 4 (1,100 XP)
AC 17 | HP 85 (10d10+30) | Speed 40 ft.
Resist: bludgeoning, piercing, slashing (nonmagical) | Immune: poison, psychic, exhaustion, most conditions | Darkvision 60 ft
Siege Monster. Deals double damage to objects and structures.
Multiattack. Two Gore attacks.
Gore. +8 to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 18 (2d10+7) piercing; Medium or smaller target must succeed a DC 16 Str save or be knocked prone.
Trampling Charge (Recharge 5–6). Moves up to its speed; adjacent creatures in its path take a bonus Gore attack.
Shutdown. Adjacent creature may spend an action for a DC 15 Arcana/Investigation check to disable it (provokes an opportunity attack).
The heel-hatch is barely wide enough to crouch through — bronze-dark inside, smelling of hot copper and centuries of sealed heat. The gear shaft rises 40 feet in a tight spiral of iron gantry, the walls alive with turning cogs the size of shields. Every third circuit, a steam vent erupts with enough force to knock a person sideways. Bronze figures patrol the platforms above, unhurried, methodical, waiting for something that needs stopping.
Encounter 2 — The Clockwork Ascent
Overview
The party climbs Talos's internal heel shaft toward the torso. Bronze Sentries patrol the gantry above; steam vents erupt in three-round cycles; three valve stations along the path can neutralize the sentinels without combat. Kyros waits in a locked alcove at the shaft's midpoint. Reaching the torso access hatch is the win condition — how the party gets there shapes Encounter 3.
- Style: Environmental hazard with fully avoidable guardian skirmish
- Win Condition: Reach the torso access hatch (top of the shaft)
- XP Note (Hard target ≈ 10,800 adj. XP for 6×L10): If combat occurs: 2× Bronze Sentries (900 XP) + terrain hazard pressure + escort clock = Hard by design. To reach full Hard budget: add 1× Keraunos Legionnaire (700 XP). Adjusted total with 3 creatures: ~4,800 XP. With steam-vent attrition and height advantage, effectively Hard. Full Hard: use 3× Sentries + 1 Keraunos = ~5,400 × 1.5 = 8,100 XP.
Creatures (Baseline)
- 2× Bronze Sentry — CR 2 (450 XP each) — patrol gantry platforms
Hard Additions
- 1× Keraunos Legionnaire — CR 3 (700 XP) — guards the upper platform near the torso hatch
- Steam vents now erupt every 2 rounds instead of 3
- Rotating gear-plates extend to half the gantry surface (DC 14 Athletics or Acrobatics to move through without stumbling)
🗺 Terrain & Features
Vertical gear shaft interior — 40 ft spiral gantry (5 platforms, 8 ft apart)
- Steam vents (initiative count 20, every 3 rounds) — 10 ft cone; DC 13 Dex save or 2d6 fire + pushed 5 ft toward the shaft edge
- Rotating gear-plate floor sections on every other platform (difficult terrain; a creature shoved into an active gear is destroyed/killed — DC 13 Acrobatics to avoid falling in)
- Three valve stations (Platforms 1, 3, 5) — each marked with a bronze spiral
- Kyros's alcove (Platform 3, east wall) — gear-locked, visible through an iron grille
- Torso access hatch (top of shaft) — sealed but openable from this side; the party hears grinding above once Talos takes a step
Hard (APL10 baseline): 2× Bronze Sentries + 1 Keraunos on upper platform; valve DCs 14; steam every 3 rounds.
Harder (APL11+): 3 Sentries + 1 Keraunos + 1 Pyrikaus; valve DCs 15; steam every 2 rounds.
Mechanics
- Valve Puzzle — Bypass All Sentries (DC 14 Investigation or Arcana per station; DC 10 with Aegis Pin): Three valve stations control the sentries' patrol routines. Each takes one Action. Succeeding at 2 of 3 sets all Sentries to dormant standby — they freeze mid-stride and will not reactivate unless struck. Failing a valve check triggers a 10-ft pulse that alerts the nearest Sentry (it turns toward the checking character). The party can split up to check multiple valves simultaneously.
- Waiting Out Steam Cycles (Perception DC 12): A character who spends a full round observing can identify the steam vent cycle (every 3 rounds at count 20). With this knowledge, the party can time movement to avoid all vent damage.
- Shove into Gear-Plates: A Sentry shoved into an active rotating gear-plate is destroyed instantly (no saves — construct meets mechanism). Requires a successful shove attack (contested Athletics vs. the Sentry's Athletics +5). The party can use this as the primary tactic if they control positioning.
- Alcove Lock (DC 12 Sleight of Hand or tinker's tools; Free Action with Aegis Pin display): The gear-lock opens on a success. Kyros emerges with wing-clicks of what might be gratitude.
- If Ikara is present, she can attempt the lock with Advantage (her schematics include the alcove type, even if the location detail is wrong).
- Kyros immediately begins leading the party toward the correct torso access route (correcting any wrong-direction assumption).

Medium Construct, Unaligned · CR 2 (450 XP)
AC 16 | HP 45 (6d8+18) | Speed 30 ft.
Resist: bludgeoning, piercing, slashing (nonmagical) | Immune: poison, psychic, exhaustion, most conditions | Darkvision 60 ft
Multiattack. Two Bronze Fist attacks.
Bronze Fist. +5 to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 8 (1d10+3) bludgeoning.
Standby. Can be set dormant via the valve puzzle (DC 14 Investigation/Arcana, 2 of 3 valves).
The torso-hatch opens into a vaulted chamber where the air tastes of heated bronze and something older — ichor, the blood of gods rendered into fluid mechanics. The heart is here: a central dais housing the Ichor Valve, connections running in all directions through copper channels that pulse with each of the colossus's mechanical heartbeats. Bronze constructs stand in arranged formation, their logic simple — nothing touches the valve. Somewhere above, through the vibration in the floor, the harbor is getting closer.
Encounter 3 — The Ichor Heart (Boss)
Overview
Deep in Talos's chest, the corrupted Ichor Heart churns amid grinding gears. The Talos Overseer — the chamber's command intelligence — directs Legionnaire constructs to defend the valve. The party must use the Aegis Pin to complete the shutdown before Talos reaches the harbor. Eight rounds. Three successes. The Overseer actively works to undo every success.
- Style: Race-against-the-clock boss encounter — defend the ritual, not the party
- Win Condition: 3 cumulative shutdown-check successes at the Ichor Valve within 8 rounds
- XP Note (Deadly target ≈ 16,800 adj. XP for 6×L10): Talos Overseer CR 8 (3,900 XP) + 2× Bronze Legionnaire CR 3 (700 × 2) + Keraunos CR 3 (700) + Pyrikaus CR 3 (700) = 6,700 base. With multiplier (5 creatures): × 2.0 = 13,400 XP. Add terrain hazards and the 8-round clock: effectively Deadly for APL 10. Bump Overseer to listed HP + add legendary action to reach full 16,800+ budget.
Creatures (Hard Baseline)
- 1× Talos Overseer — CR 8 (3,900 XP) — hovers over the dais, 10 ft elevation
- 2× Bronze Legionnaire — CR 3 (700 XP each) — flanking the valve dais
- 1× Keraunos Legionnaire — CR 3 (700 XP) — guards the chamber entrance
- 1× Pyrikaus Legionnaire — CR 3 (700 XP) — patrols the west conduit wall
Deadly Additions
- Overseer gains 1 Legendary Action per round: use it for an extra Arc Lash or Command Legionnaires
- Round 4: ichor rupture — all creatures in a 20-ft radius of the heart take 2d8 force (DC 14 Dex half)
- Add 1× additional Bronze Legionnaire if party bypassed Encounter 2 without combat
🗺 Terrain & Features
Circular ichor-heart vault — 60 ft diameter, vaulted ceiling 30 ft
- Central dais (raised 5 ft, radius 10 ft) holds the Ichor Valve — anyone on it is visible to all constructs
- Rotating gear-plates (initiative count 20) — DC 12 Dex save or slide 10 ft away from dais; failure gives Disadvantage on next attack roll
- Ruptured wall conduits — 1d8 fire (pyrikaus side) or 1d8 lightning (keraunos side) on contact; destroyed with DC 13 Athletics or a single attack
- Ichor-overflow pools (floor-level, 10 ft diameter each side) — difficult terrain; counts as oil for fire damage purposes
- The Overseer's hover position (10 ft above dais) — it cannot be shoved; ranged attacks have cover (half) from the dais railing
Deadly (APL10 baseline): All creatures as listed; Overseer has 1 Legendary Action; 8-round clock; ichor rupture Round 4.
Harder (APL11+): Overseer gains 2 Legendary Actions; add 1 elite Bronze Legionnaire (HP 100, +2 to hit); 7-round clock.
Mechanics
- Shutdown Check (DC 13 Arcana or tinker's tools; DC 10 with Aegis Pin; Advantage if Ikara present): A PC adjacent to the valve spends their Action. Max 1 success per round. 3 successes = shutdown complete. The checking PC is at maximum exposure — all constructs prioritize targeting them unless they have cover.
- Overcharge Core (Overseer, Recharge 6): Undoes the most recent banked success. A PC may Reaction-counter with DC 15 Arcana (DC 12 with Aegis Pin) to stabilize and prevent the loss. If no one counters, the success is erased and the clock effectively loses a round.
- 8-Round Deadline: At the end of Round 8 without 3 successes, Talos completes its lurch into the harbor — the party must escape a collapsing chamber (DC 13 Dex save each round or 2d6 bludgeoning from debris, 4 rounds). The colossus survives but destroys the harbor.
- Gearlock Sync (Overseer trait): At the start of the Overseer's turn, one Legionnaire within 30 ft gains resistance to all damage until the start of the Overseer's next turn. Killing the Overseer first strips this buff from all remaining constructs — the tactical priority inversion the party must identify.
- Ikara's Assist: If present, grants Advantage on all shutdown checks. Once per encounter she can also auto-counter an Overcharge Core if she rolls 10+ on a d20 (she remembers the exact counter-frequency from her schematics).
- Kyros's One-Shot: Kyros can auto-succeed one shutdown check by physically inserting itself into the valve mechanism (once per session). It takes 2d8 force damage doing so but is not destroyed.

NPC Cards
Kadmos
Medium Humanoid (disguised deity), Neutral · Quest Giver
Role. Quest giver, dockside smith at the Drowned Anchor tavern in Amnisos.
Motivation. Wants Talos disabled, not destroyed — he forged it and refuses to let it be slain like a common beast.
Secret. He is Hephaestus in mortal disguise; reveals this only if directly confronted with divine-detecting magic or if the party succeeds a DC 18 Insight check. See the full profile: Hephaestus, Gods & Immortals.
Roleplay Notes. Speaks plainly, undersells his own power, deflects gratitude with dry humor. Will not fight alongside the party — "a god's hand is heavier than it looks."
If Forced to Act. Treat as a CR 10 humanoid with resistance to fire and an at-will heat-metal-like touch; he avoids combat whenever possible.
Ikara of Knossos
Medium Humanoid, Neutral Good · Potential Ally
Role. Rescuable artificer-scholar, descendant of Daedalus's workshop apprentices; recruited from Encounter 1.
Motivation. Obsessed with proving her lineage's worth by saving Talos rather than watching it be destroyed.
Secret. She has partial, half-remembered schematics of Talos's interior — the source of her assistance bonuses.
Roleplay Notes. Anxious, talks fast when nervous, lights up when given a technical problem to solve.
Mechanical Benefit. If rescued, grants advantage on Investigation/Arcana checks related to Talos's mechanisms in Encounters 2–3.
Kyros, the Bronze Owl
Tiny Construct, Unaligned · CR 1/2 · Potential Ally
AC 14 | HP 10 | Speed 10 ft, fly 40 ft.
Skills: Perception +6
Scout. Can fly ahead and report hazards or enemy positions.
Shutdown Assist (1/session). Auto-succeeds one shutdown check at the Ichor Valve in Encounter 3.
Recruitment. Freed from a gear-locked alcove in Encounter 2 with a DC 12 Sleight of Hand or tinker's tools check.
Item Cards
The Aegis Pin
Wondrous Item · Quest Maguffin
Description. A cold bronze nail etched with spiraling script, given by Kadmos at the outset, attached to a scrap of hide.
Note Attached. "Seek the ichor-valve at heart or heel. Turn the pin thrice. The bronze giant will sleep, not die."
Function. Required to attempt shutdown checks at the Ichor Valve in Encounter 3. Without it, the valve cannot be engaged at all.
Secondary Use. Can instantly disable a single lesser construct (Bronze Sentry or Legionnaire) if inserted into its back-panel port as an action — usable once per encounter.
Reward Cards
Post-session keepables. Reward is the first tag. Mechanics below are for ongoing use after this oneshot.
The Aegis Pin
Reward · Wondrous · Requires Attunement
Mechanics. While attuned and wearing the pin on armor or a cloak, your AC increases by 1. Once per long rest, as a bonus action, choose yourself or an ally within 5 feet: that creature gains 15 temporary hit points and resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks until the end of your next turn. Once per short rest, you have advantage on one check made to climb, brace, or sabotage a Large or larger construct or siege engine.
Appearance. A cold bronze nail etched with spiraling aegis scales, tip darkened by ichor-oil.
Lore. Drawn from Talos's heart-chamber after Crete's colossus was taught mercy instead of erasure.
Quote. "Guard the island — not by unbroken bronze, but by a heart that still knows who to spare." — Daedalan note
Earn when: Climb inside Talos and still the bronze heart without destroying Crete's guardian forever.
