The Debt of Antaeus

A level 10 borderland boss-hunt against earthbound strength.

Setting Borderland crossroads south of Thessaly → half-buried toll shrine → sinking practice pit → the giant's debt-ring on cracked limestone
Atmosphere Primordial extortion · earth as prison · honor-codes weaponized against the honorable · the smell of debt on dry clay
Materials Sun-baked clay, oath-tablets in wet script, rough limestone ring stones, poured iron crane chains, packed earth, caravan linen, iron pins
Tone Mythic wrestling tragedy — the giant is not malicious, only unable to imagine losing while the earth remembers its debt to him
Players 6 × Level 10 · 3–3.5 hrs · 3 encounters
Key Ally Nesra, Caravan Wrestler (recruit Enc. Encounter 1 or 2) · Maguffin: Sky-Shackle Chain

Description

The party reaches the crossroads south of Thessaly to find caravaneers buried neck-deep in dust, their wagons overturned around a half-submerged toll shrine. A lean, dust-caked merchant named Dymas of the Salt Caravan is the only one left with both hands free — and he uses them to hand the party a cold iron chain of seven sky-black links before explaining that the cult which runs this road operates on a principle older than law: you wrestle, you lose, you owe. The cult has never lost. Gaia's oldest son lives in the rock under their feet.

The cult does not want blood. It wants names on the tablet. Antaeus, the giant who anchors this contract in soil, heals as fast as he can be hurt as long as both his feet press earth. Winning through attrition is not an option. The only path is to lift him — body and contract — free of the ground that makes him invincible. The Sky-Shackle Chain Dymas presses into a player's hands is the instrument for that. But first the party must get to the ring without every captive being driven deeper into the earth, and they must get through two encounters of escalating cult pressure before they can face the giant himself.

The road enforces. The giant laughs. The only move the cult has never seen is someone who refuses to play for keeps.

"A clay debt tablet lists names in wet script. Dymas points to the newest entry: your party's names, already forming in the clay. 'They wrote you in before you arrived,' he says. 'The shrine reads intent. You meant to come this way.'" — Dymas, at the buried toll shrine
DM Only — Sky-Shackle Chain Payoffs (All Three Acts):

Act 1: The chain floats slightly above the dusty road surface and does not trigger the shrine's earth-script. DC 13 Arcana or Religion (DC 9 with chain in hand) identifies it as sky-iron — material that has never touched ground and which the cult's earth-oath cannot bind. With this knowledge: lifting a captive using the chain (Action + DC 12 Athletics or Arcana) removes their name from the debt tablet instantly and without a contest roll. Without chain: freeing a captive requires DC 16 Athletics against a Strength DC 16 earth-grip contested check.

Act 2: The chain resonates near the crane's iron hooks in the practice pit — they are also sky-iron by accident of forge. A player who holds the chain and makes DC 14 Arcana or Investigation identifies the hooks as compatible anchor points; attaching the chain to a hook (Free Action if proficient with improvised tools, otherwise an Action) grants the party a permanent elevated platform 10 ft above the pit floor — this platform carries forward into Encounter 3 as a prepared lifting rig. Without the chain, building the rig requires two successful DC 16 checks plus two tool uses.

Act 3: The chain is required to suppress Antaeus's earth-healing. Fastening it (requires a successful grapple contest or DC 17 Dexterity maneuver to attach during combat) immediately ends his Earth-Heal trait for the round. While the chain is attached and Antaeus is not touching earth, he loses regeneration and resistance to bludgeoning damage. The prepared rig from Act 2 reduces the DC to fully lift him from 18 to 14.

Handout — The Sky-Shackle Chain

Dymas presses seven sky-black chain links into a player's palm — links that drift slightly above any surface rather than resting on it. On a scrap of caravan linen, in cramped trade-script: "Debt belongs to the ground. Judgment belongs to the open sky. Bind only what you can lift." See Sky-Shackle Chain for full card.

Key NPCs

👤

Dymas of the Salt Caravan — Quest Giver · Neutral

Dymas presents as a pragmatic caravan master — efficient, calm under pressure, and very good at making problems sound solvable. He underplays his own role, refers to the cult politely ("the wrestling brotherhood"), and is quietly relieved when someone else seems angry on his behalf. He speaks in trade-tongue axioms and never raises his voice. Secret: he once paid the cult's initiation fee to divert a competing caravan onto this road, knowing the road-tax would break them. His own name is now on the debt tablet — next after the party's. He will not confess this unless cornered with a DC 17 Insight or Intimidation check, at which point he offers to cover one round of the party's expenses as a quiet apology. RP hook: A player who succeeds on DC 14 Insight notices Dymas never looks at the debt tablet even when describing it — he knows his name is on it and can't afford to confirm that. DC 16 Persuasion to get him to admit what he did; DC 13 to get him to carry the Sky-Shackle Chain in Act 1 to free a captive himself (he's stronger than he looks).

🤼

Nesra, Caravan Wrestler — Potential Ally · Neutral

Nesra is buried to the hip in the practice pit of Encounter 2 — she was taken at the shrine road and refused to pay, which the cult respected enough to bury her rather than force her to fight. She is a professional caravan guard and competitive wrestler from the Thessalian circuit, and she has watched the cult's technique since she arrived. She is not afraid of them. Secret: she has identified the cult's one structural weakness — the Grapplers cannot reset their stance if thrown ring-out, and they rely entirely on the earth under their feet for momentum. She has never seen anyone try sky-iron against the ground-oath and genuinely does not know if it will work — but she suspects it will. RP hook: She will recruit immediately if the party frees her and demonstrates they intend to fight the cult on the cult's terms — she has no patience for people who just want to run. DC 13 Persuasion to get her tactical assessment of Antaeus without fighting first. DC 16 Athletics contest to earn her unreserved respect as equals; on success she fights at full strength in Act 3 and will use her body to help hold Antaeus aloft once the chain is attached.

⛏

Gortos, the Debt-Ring Herald — Minor NPC · Lawful Neutral

Gortos is the cult's record-keeper and ring announcer — a compact, leather-skinned man who reads names off the tablet before each match and has done so for forty years. He is not a fighter and does not pretend to be. He genuinely believes the debt-rite is just — it is older than any law he respects — and he is saddened by parties who treat the system as a villain rather than a rule. Secret: he secretly keeps a second tablet — one that records the debts the cult has never cancelled, including Antaeus's own first debt to Gaia for the earth-gift. Showing him his own tablet's corruption (DC 15 Persuasion + evidence from Dymas) can cause him to refuse to call the third match, depriving Antaeus of his ritual sanction bonus (+2 to hit while the call is made). RP hook: A player who treats Gortos with formal respect (DC 14 Persuasion or Insight) can ask him about the sky-iron before Encounter 2 — he knows what it is and will confirm it in clipped, legal language without helping further.

Major Beats

  • The Crossroads Toll. Party finds caravaneers buried neck-deep at the toll shrine. Dymas presses the Sky-Shackle into a player's hands and explains the rule: wrestle and lose, or leave names in clay and never travel this road again. DC 13 History: the Debt-Ring rite is a primordial Earth-compact predating the Olympian settlement; challenging it requires either winning within its own rules or proving it has been corrupted. DC 15 Religion: sky-iron is the one material the earth-oath cannot bind.
  • Encounter 1 — Names in the Road-Dust. Three Grapplers and a Clay-Blood Priest enforce the first match at the shrine. Dymas's captive crew are watching — freeing them during the fight (non-combat path available) earns Nesra's location. Hard encounter; avoidable via legal challenge or DC 15 Persuasion of Gortos.
  • The Practice Pit. Gortos leads the party toward the giant's ring via the cult's sinking practice arena. The pit is a test and a trap. Captives are buried along the walls. Nesra is among them, half-seen from the entrance.
  • Encounter 2 — The Pit That Pulls Back. Two Clay-Blood Priests and an Earthbound Ogre Debtor defend the pit. The Sky-Shackle resonates with the crane hooks; a party that investigates can build a lifting rig. Hard encounter; fully bypassable via a 5-success skill challenge. Freeing Nesra here recruits her immediately.
  • Encounter 3 — No Ground Beneath the Giant. The debt-ring's limestone floor is ancient and solid — it remembers every fight ever held here, and so does Antaeus. He enters laughing, heals faster than he can be hurt, and demands names. The Sky-Shackle and the rig from the pit are the instruments of victory. Deadly encounter; the earth-healing makes direct attrition impossible without the chain. Three successful lift-checks to fully separate him from soil.
  • Resolution. When Antaeus's feet leave the earth, the debt tablet cracks. All names dissolve. Gortos, if still present, reads the second tablet aloud for the first time in forty years and weeps. Dymas's name was on it all along — already cancelled before the party arrived. He will not explain why.

Encounter 1 — Names in the Road-Dust

Hard · ~45 min · APL10 target ≈ 11,550 XP

The shrine is half-swallowed by the road itself — limestone blocks tilted at angles, the road-surface cracked and scored where the earth has shifted to accommodate the cult's ring stones. Eight caravaneers are buried neck-deep in a rough circle, their faces sun-burnt and hollow. A Clay-Blood Priest moves between them with a bowl of wet clay, re-pressing their names into the tablet every time one starts to blur. Three Grapplers pace the ring's perimeter in matched silence, bare-chested, feet planted deliberately wide. Gortos stands at the shrine-post reading names as the party approaches, as if they were expected.

Overview

At a half-buried toll shrine, travelers are forced to wrestle for their freedom while clay tablets record debts no one agreed to. The Clay-Blood Priest's ritual empowers the Grapplers' pins; interrupting it frees captives one by one and breaks the earth-link that makes the ring binding.

APL10 Hard Composition: 3× Debt-Ring Grapplers (CR5 · 1,800 XP each = 5,400) + 1× Clay-Blood Priest (CR6 · 2,300 XP) = 7,700 base × multiplier 1.5 ≈ 11,550 XP — Hard.

Hard Additions already included: Priest maintains Earth-Script (captives held to DC 16 unless chain used); Grapplers reset stance if knocked prone on earth (stand as Bonus Action); Gortos calls the match (+1 to Grappler attack rolls while calling).

🗺 Terrain & Features

Ring Stones (×8): Form the perimeter. Stepping outside the ring as a full move (no push) counts as ring-out; Grapplers lose morale if thrown ring-out by the party.
Buried Captives: Freeing one requires DC 16 Athletics (ground-grip contest) or Sky-Shackle + DC 12 Arcana (automatic success).
Toll Shrine (center): Holds the debt tablet. Lifting the tablet off the shrine stone as an Action (DC 14 Dexterity) causes the Clay-Blood Priest's concentration on Earth-Script to break.
Dust Cloud: Running across the open road area creates a 10-ft dust concealment for one round (Stealth check = Dexterity vs. passive Perception 12).

Non-Combat Options

  • Legal Challenge (DC 15 Persuasion or DC 14 Religion): Invoke the older Law of Hospitality to demand the rite be suspended while guests are being fed. On success, Gortos pauses the match for 1 round, preventing the Priest from reinforcing Earth-Script and giving the party a free action. On failure, the Grapplers move in.
  • Shame Performance (DC 16 Performance, crowd watching): Publicly shame a Grappler's technique before the buried captives. On success, that Grappler is rattled (−2 to attack rolls next round) and two captives start digging themselves free. On a critical success (roll 20+), the crowd cheers and Gortos must pause the formal call — the entire encounter pauses for 2 rounds.
  • Sky-Shackle Gambit: Holding the chain visibly during negotiation and succeeding DC 13 Arcana or DC 15 Intimidation reveals the sky-iron to Gortos, who recognizes it. He will not stop the fight — but he adds a note to the tablet that the party holds an objection instrument, which reduces Earth-Script DC by 3 for the rest of the encounter.
  • Turn the Ogre's Debt: (Not present in Enc. 1, but if Dymas reveals his name is on the tablet) DC 15 Persuasion to convince Gortos that Dymas's old debt corrupts the current rite. On success, Gortos hesitates — the Priest loses 1 action next round resolving the question.

Mechanics

  • Non-combat path: challenge the debt rite with DC 14 Religion or DC 15 Persuasion before a crowd; full non-combat success requires 3 legal victories before 2 failures.
  • Use the Sky-Shackle to lift a captive or tablet without triggering earth-script (automatic success).
  • Winning a match by ring-out (not kill) deprives Grapplers of their Earth-Stance reset bonus and earns a free pass toward Encounter 2.
  • Killing Grapplers alerts the boss shrine: Antaeus arrives in Act 3 with 1 extra Legendary Action (Slam the Ground, recharge 5–6: 30-ft cone, DC 16 Strength save or knocked prone).
Easier (APL 8–9): Remove 1 Grappler; Priest does not reinforce Earth-Script after round 2. Harder (APL 11–12): Add 1 Earthbound Ogre Debtor; Grapplers have Earth-Grip (grapple escape DC +2).

Encounter 2 — The Pit That Pulls Back

Hard · ~60 min · APL10 target ≈ 11,250 XP

The practice pit is a sunken clay arena twenty feet below road level, reached by a ramp that smells of oil and packed earth. The walls are studded with the hands and shoulders of buried captives — one of them is Nesra, half-visible near the far wall, who meets the party's eyes and tilts her head toward an iron crane hook overhead. Two Clay-Blood Priests stand on prayer mounds at opposite ends of the pit, bowls in hand, whispering continuously. The Earthbound Ogre Debtor is chained to a central post — not as a prisoner but as an anchor. His name was on the tablet sixteen years ago and it has never come off.

Overview

The cult tests the party in a sinking practice pit where every fall feeds the ground and every lifted stone reveals a captive. The pit floor lowers by 1 ft at the start of each round that both Priests remain active (maximum 5 ft total). A party that destroys or separates the Priests from their bowls stops the sinking immediately.

APL10 Hard Composition: 2× Clay-Blood Priests (CR6 · 2,300 XP each = 4,600) + 1× Earthbound Ogre Debtor (CR7 · 2,900 XP) = 7,500 base × multiplier 1.5 ≈ 11,250 XP — Hard.

Hard Additions already included: Pit Sink mechanic (floor drops, reducing movement options and increasing grapple difficulty); Priests share Ritual Synergy (while both active, each Priest's Mud Brand reduces speed by 15 ft instead of 10); Ogre is Grudging (must succeed DC 14 Persuasion + evidence of the uncancelled debt before he will stop attacking).

🗺 Terrain & Features

Pit Floor (clay): Counts as difficult terrain for climbing purposes. After 3 ft of sinking, grapple escape DCs increase by 2.
Iron Crane (overhead): The Sky-Shackle resonates with the sky-iron hooks — a player who makes DC 14 Arcana identifies this; attaching the chain to a hook grants a permanent 10-ft platform and creates the lifting rig for Act 3.
Prayer Mounds (×2): If a Priest is pushed off their mound (DC 14 Athletics, or any knockback), their ritual breaks, stopping Pit Sink for that round.
Buried Captives (×6): Each freed captive (DC 16 Athletics or Sky-Shackle + Arcana DC 12) removes one success needed from the skill challenge. Nesra is freed on the third captive rescue or on DC 14 Arcana (she knows how to twist her own body free if given slack).
Ogre's Chain Post: Breaking the post (AC 13, HP 30) frees the ogre's movement but does not immediately change his allegiance.

Non-Combat Options

  • Debt Tablet Evidence (from Enc. 1): If the party collected proof of the Ogre's never-cancelled debt, showing it to him requires DC 14 Persuasion. On success, he stops attacking immediately and on his next turn begins pulling captives free (counts as 2 captive successes per round). He does not become an ally but stops being an enemy.
  • Skill Challenge — Liberation (5 successes / 3 failures): Free captives, rig lifting points, interrupt Priest rituals. Applicable skills: Athletics DC 15 (pull captive free), Arcana DC 14 (interrupt a ritual), Persuasion DC 16 (appeal to a Priest's doubt), Sleight of Hand DC 14 (steal a prayer bowl without triggering the Priest's reaction). Each success brings the party one step closer to stopping the pit entirely.
  • Convince the Ogre to Defect (DC 16 Persuasion + evidence): Full success: the Ogre physically grabs a Priest and pins them against the wall for 2 rounds, blocking their actions entirely. He asks only one thing in return — remove his name from the tablet.
  • Crane Hook Identification (DC 14 Arcana, Sky-Shackle required): Attach the chain to the iron hook as an action; the pit floor immediately stops sinking and the crane becomes a usable lifting point for Act 3 (reduces lifting DC from 18 to 14).

Mechanics

  • Non-combat path: free captives and rig lifting points with 5 successes before 3 failures (see Skill Challenge above).
  • Each raised platform (from crane rig) carries forward as safe ground in Encounter 3.
  • Clay-Blood rites interrupted by removing bowls, tablets, or Priests from soil — Priest off mound = 1 round without Mud Brand or pit-sink contribution.
  • The reluctant ogre can be turned by showing his name remains on the debt tablet (DC 14 Persuasion + evidence).
Easier (APL 8–9): Remove 1 Clay-Blood Priest; pit sink stops after 2 ft. Harder (APL 11–12): Add 2× Debt-Ring Grapplers patrolling the perimeter; Pit Sink rate doubles if both Priests maintain synergy.

Encounter 3 — No Ground Beneath the Giant

Deadly · ~90 min · APL10 target ≈ 20,400 XP

The debt-ring is a circle of ancient limestone forty feet across, raised six inches above the surrounding earth on a bedrock shelf that has not moved since the age of titans. Antaeus enters from the far side — he is not dramatically huge, no more than twelve feet tall, but his footfalls carry a sound like the road closing behind him. He is already laughing. He has never needed to stop. He takes the debt tablet from Gortos, reads the party's names aloud, and sets it face-down on the stone. Then he looks at the Sky-Shackle in the party's hand, and for the first time his expression does something other than amusement. He says: "I haven't seen sky-iron since the first oath. I wondered when someone would bring it." He attacks on round one regardless.

Overview

Antaeus heals 20 HP at the start of each of his turns while both feet touch the limestone ring floor. The Sky-Shackle, applied during a successful grapple or dexterity maneuver (DC 17), suppresses this healing for that turn and the next — and makes him vulnerable to bludgeoning damage while suspended. The prepared crane rig from Act 2 reduces the grapple DC to fully lift him from 18 to 14.

APL10 Deadly Composition: Antaeus (CR12 · 8,400 XP) + 1× Earthbound Ogre Debtor (CR7 · 2,900 XP) + 1× Clay-Blood Priest (CR6 · 2,300 XP) = 13,600 base × multiplier 1.5 ≈ 20,400 XP — Deadly.

Deadly Additions: Antaeus has Earth-Heal (20 HP/turn while on ground), Gaia's Blessing (advantage on saves while both feet on limestone), and Earth-Slam (Legendary Action: 30-ft cone DC 16 Strength save or prone). Chain suppression and lifting rig are the party's primary mechanical levers.

🗺 Terrain & Features

Limestone Ring Floor: Antaeus's Earth-Heal only activates on this surface (not on loose slabs or the platforms the party built in Act 2).
Crane Rig Platform (if built in Act 2): 10 ft above ring floor. Antaeus cannot Earth-Heal while on this platform. Getting him onto it requires the lift sequence (see below).
Broken Columns (×4): Provide half-cover. Can be knocked over (DC 16 Athletics) to create difficult terrain in a 15-ft line.
Loose Slabs (×6, scattered): Throwing a slab at Antaeus (ranged attack, improvised weapon, +5 to hit, 2d8 bludgeoning) counts as a distraction — if it hits, his Earth-Heal is delayed by 1 round as he resets his stance.
Captive Edge: Three remaining captives are chained to ring posts. Freeing them (DC 14 Dexterity or Athletics) removes them from Antaeus's leverage — he gains no additional Legendary Actions from "threatening captives" once all three are free.
Gortos's Perch: If Gortos was not neutralized in Act 2, he calls each round — Antaeus gains +1 to attack rolls. DC 15 Intimidation or DC 16 Persuasion to silence Gortos for the rest of the fight.

Lift Sequence — Separating the Giant from Earth

  • Step 1 — Chain Application: During or immediately after a successful grapple contest (party member vs. Antaeus Athletics, DC 17 / DC 14 with crane rig). Action required. Suppresses Earth-Heal for that turn and the next; makes Antaeus vulnerable to bludgeoning.
  • Step 2 — Coordinated Lift (DC 16 Athletics, two party members acting together): Antaeus is lifted 5 ft off the ring surface. While lifted, he cannot use Earth-Slam Legendary Action and loses Gaia's Blessing.
  • Step 3 — Ring-Out (DC 14 Athletics contested by Antaeus Strength DC 19): Antaeus is thrown clear of the ring onto unbound earth. On success: the debt tablet cracks — the earth-compact dissolves. All captive names dissolve simultaneously. Antaeus lands outside the ring and cannot return without the debt-rite's sanction (Gortos must call him back; if Gortos was silenced this is impossible). Antaeus does not fight further — he sits in the dust and laughs again, more quietly, and says the party has earned the sky today.

Mechanics

  • Antaeus heals 20 HP/turn while both feet on the limestone ring. He cannot be killed by attrition alone — the earth-healing regenerates faster than the party can deal damage without suppressing it.
  • Sky-Shackle applied during a grapple (DC 17 Dexterity or grapple contest) suppresses Earth-Heal for 2 rounds and grants vulnerability to bludgeoning. DC reduces to 14 if crane rig was built in Act 2.
  • Win condition: complete the three-step Lift Sequence above. Alternatively: ring-out Antaeus via a combined bull-rush (DC 20 Strength athletics, all party members assisting) — harder but faster.
  • Nesra (if recruited) assists Step 2 automatically if she is alive and within reach, granting Advantage on the Lift check.
Easier (APL 8–9): Antaeus heals 10 HP/turn; Lift Sequence needs only 2 steps; Earth-Slam range reduced to 20 ft. Harder (APL 11–12): Antaeus heals 30 HP/turn; gains +1 Legendary Action (Debt-Grip: one grappled creature is automatically restrained, DC 17 Strength to escape); Lift Sequence requires 4 steps.

⚖️ Difficulty Scaling

As Written ★ — 6 Players, Average Level 10

  • Baseline for this guide. Encounters 1–2 are Hard (~11,250–11,550 XP); Encounter 3 is Deadly (~20,400 XP) for six PCs at average level 10.
  • XP budgets (6×L10 thresholds): Hard ≈ 10,800 · Deadly ≈ 16,800. Earth-Heal makes Encounter 3 effectively harder than raw XP suggests — budget for 30% more resource drain.
  • Skill DCs: 14–17 across the three encounters; Lift Sequence DCs 17/16/14 (reduced to 14/14/12 with crane rig).

Library Standard — 6 Players, Average Level 8

  • Enc. 1: Remove 1 Grappler; Priest does not reinforce Earth-Script after round 2. Enc. 2: Remove 1 Priest; pit sink stops at 2 ft. Enc. 3: Antaeus heals 10 HP/turn; Lift Sequence = 2 steps; Earth-Slam cone 20 ft.
  • Skill DCs −1 across the board. Gortos does not call the match in Enc. 3.

Easier (APL 8–9)

  • Apply Library Standard adjustments. Additionally: Ogre in Enc. 2 does not require evidence to stop attacking — DC 12 Persuasion alone suffices. Antaeus does not use Earth-Slam in round 1.

Harder (APL 11–12)

  • Enc. 1: Add 1 Earthbound Ogre; Grapplers have Earth-Grip (+2 escape DC). Enc. 2: Add 2 Grapplers patrolling perimeter; pit sink rate doubles when both Priests maintain synergy. Enc. 3: Antaeus heals 30 HP/turn; Lift Sequence = 4 steps; Debt-Grip Legendary Action (grappled = restrained, DC 17 escape).
  • Skill DCs +1 across the board. Gortos cannot be silenced by Persuasion alone — requires a successful DC 18 Insight to find his point of doubt first.

Dymas of the Salt Caravan

Medium Humanoid (human), pragmatic quest giver

Motivation. Recover his caravan crew and cancel the impossible debts forced onto travelers at the giant's shrine.

Secret. He once paid the cult to break a rival caravan and now his own name is next on the tablet.

Hard rule. He will not leave the buried captives behind, even if abandoning them would make the fight easier.

◈

Sky-Shackle Chain

Wondrous Item (maguffin), Unique

Appearance: Seven blue-black chain links that drift an inch above any surface and hum in open air.

Handout. "Debt belongs to the ground. Judgment belongs to the open sky. Bind only what you can lift."

Enc. 1–2. Can hoist one buried captive, wagon, or stone slab; advantage on one check to lift, drag, or separate something from earth.

Enc. 3. Fastened around Antaeus during a successful grapple or terrain maneuver, it suspends his earth-healing and makes him vulnerable until he touches ground again.
