Maenad Midnight
One-Shot · 6 Players · Level 10 · ~3–3.5 Hours · Greek Mythology
📜 Session Summary
Style Urban escort under ecstatic pressure, built for restraint, disguise, and mercy.
Win Condition Deliver the prince to the dawn treaty, keep the revelers alive, and prove the city can honor Dionysus without becoming his casualty.
Loss Condition The prince breaks sobriety or dies, the riot becomes a massacre, and the god's mask follows the party into future feasts.
Players 6 × Level 10 · 3–3.5 hrs · 3 encounters
Key Ally Thyia, Exhausted Maenad (recruit Enc. Encounter 1 or 2) · Maguffin: Dry Cup of Ariadne
Setting Thebes at midnight during a Dionysian festival — marble palace gate, narrow alleyways that rearrange under fey music, and a lamplit public square with a treaty dais. Street-level throughout.
Atmosphere Dionysian mania pressing against civic duty — drums and wine-smell everywhere, torchlit faces shifting between reveler and citizen, the god's presence felt as pressure rather than presence.
Materials Clay amphorae, thyrsus stalks, laurel garlands, wine-soaked flagstones, bronze torch brackets, merchant carts tipped sideways as barricades, linen masks.
Tone Restraint is the hardest skill — the party that spills blood in the streets will win the encounter and lose the city. Compassion is the weapon; the prince is both the mission and the moral test.
Description
Prince Lykon the Unwined — young, frightened, and carrying the fate of a war-weary treaty on his shoulders — needs to reach the dawn signing table on the far side of a city that has lost its mind to Dionysian mania. The drums have been going for three days. The streets rearrange themselves under fey music. Every citizen who drank at the festival is now a reveler, and the god's presence hangs over Thebes like a warm and dangerous perfume.
The party must escort Lykon through three escalating stages: a masked departure from the palace gate (Enc 1, social infiltration), a crossing through alleyways that bend and loop under the Panpipe Trickster's influence (Enc 2, stealth skill challenge), and a confrontation at the treaty square where the Midnight Chorus has raised ecstatic doubles of the prince himself, daring the party to identify the true one without starting a massacre (Enc 3, mercy-boss). The Dry Cup of Ariadne — a sealed clay cup that rings when a lie is toasted — threads through all three encounters: detecting wine-traps in Enc 1, exposing disguised Panpipe illusions in Enc 2, and in Enc 3 shattering to create a sober hush that cuts through the Chorus's god-touched glamour and reveals the true prince.
Thyia, the Exhausted Maenad, can be recruited in Enc 1 or 2 by protecting a reveler from brutality, returning her lost thyrsus-ribbon, or promising not to shame the god's followers even when they become obstacles. She knows which alleys the fey music hasn't touched, and she is the party's best social edge against the Chorus in Enc 3. DM-facing note: At APL 10, violence is an option but a costly one — the Bacchic Bull-Mask's mortal victim survives nonlethal damage but dies if killed, and the Midnight Chorus disperses to a lethal retaliation wave if the party attempts to simply burn through it. The prize is a sober prince, a standing city, and a god who thinks the party understood the assignment.
Major Beats
- The palace wants quiet extraction; the street wants every secret sung aloud.
- Thyia proves the revelers are victims, witnesses, and obstacles at once.
- The prince is tempted with one perfect cup that would make every fear vanish.
- Dawn judges restraint as much as speed.

Encounter 1 — Masks at the Palace Gate
Overview
The palace gate smells of jasmine and spilled wine. Torchlight makes every masked face a smear of orange and shadow. Servants shoulder through the crowd carrying amphorae; guards in full bronze armor eye the revelers with weary suspicion; and three cultists in festival dress are already in position, pretending to be gate servants. The prince is sweating inside his merchant's cloak, keeping his hands at his sides so they don't shake. The gate is forty feet away. Nothing about this looks simple.
This encounter is primarily social infiltration — the party must build a convincing cover identity for the prince and get him past the gate without his name being called aloud. The Dry Cup of Ariadne rings softly if wine is offered to the prince as a "traditional welcome" (it is a trap). Thyia can be recruited here: she is being roughly handled by a palace guard who suspects her of being a spy. Her thyrsus-ribbon is in the guard's fist.
🗺 Terrain
Palace portico (30×20 ft, half-cover pillars) · fountain court (40-ft open space, slippery flagstones) · wine-cart cluster (difficult terrain, concealment) · servants' arcade (narrow 10-ft passage, crowd pressure).
Mechanics
- Cover Identity: Build a cover story with three successes before two failures — DC 15 Deception, Performance, or Insight (each PC may contribute once per "station"). Success: gate opens, party moves through. Failure: a guard calls for the prince by name.
- Dry Cup bonus: The cup rings audibly if a false servant offers wine. DC 10 Perception to notice the ring — immediate advantage on all checks for that station.
- Non-combat path (DC 14 Persuasion or DC 16 Deception): Talk the gate guard captain into escorting a "merchant delegation" through — he logs it as official and the party moves through cleanly, no crowd check required.
- Skill check scaffolding (APL 10): DC 15 social/Insight; hard reads DC 16 Insight vs. the false servant's Deception +7. DC 14 Athletics to shove aside a reveler blocking the prince without causing a scene.
- Recruit Thyia by protecting her from the guard (nonlethal DC 14 Athletics or DC 15 Persuasion), returning her thyrsus-ribbon, or letting her name the safer back-alley exit.
- If the prince is publicly named by any creature: Encounter 2 begins with the alerted-crowd penalty active (all DC 15 checks become DC 17 until Thyia is recruited).

Encounter 2 — The Alley That Keeps Dancing
Overview
The alleys of Thebes don't make sense tonight. The party rounds a corner they have already rounded and finds different doors. Laundry lines strung between buildings carry garlands that weren't there a minute ago. The panpipes are everywhere — a spiraling melody that sounds like it's coming from three directions at once. The Panpipe Trickster is ahead somewhere, rerouting the streets through illusion and minor fey geography-bending, trying to separate the escort and deliver the prince into the Chorus's hands before dawn. The streets smell of wine and crushed laurel. Every face in a window could be a reveler or a neighbor; the party can't tell.
🗺 Terrain
Looping alley grid (repeating-corner illusions; DC 14 Arcana or Investigation to find the real path) · roof laundry lines (rope handholds, DC 12 Athletics to cross above the crowd) · shrine steps (Hecate's corner, DC 13 Religion to invoke safe passage for 1 zone) · wine-flooded underpass (difficult terrain, DC 12 Athletics to cross without falling prone, 5-ft wide — excellent chokepoint).
Mechanics
- Skill Challenge: 6 successes before 3 failures. Each PC may attempt one check per zone. Valid checks: DC 15 Stealth (group), DC 15 Acrobatics (individual rooftop bypass), DC 14 Performance (counter-melody disperses an alley block), DC 15 Religion (invoke safe passage at shrines), DC 14 Arcana (identify and break a loop illusion).
- Spend a success to detour through a side alley and rescue 1d4 trapped civilians — each civilian rescued reduces the Midnight Chorus's starting HP by 20 in Enc 3 (maximum 60 HP reduction, 3 rescues).
- Panpipe illusions: A character holding the Dry Cup who fails a Stealth check may spend their reaction to shatter the cup's wax seal (early use — no Enc 3 payoff) OR attempt DC 14 Performance as a free action to counter-melody (success negates the failure).
- Violent crowd control: Any Area of Effect or direct damage against revelers clears the zone automatically (auto-success) but adds a Retaliation Wave to Enc 3 — 1d4+2 additional Ivy-Mad Revelers arrive at the start of Round 2.
- APL 10 Hard pressure: At 2 failures, the Panpipe Trickster manifests physically (CR 6 · HP 82) and begins pursuing the escort. One PC must spend their action each round to delay it (DC 15 Performance, Acrobatics, or Arcana) or it catches up and forces a combat sub-encounter mid-chase.

Encounter 3 — The Sober Hush
Overview
The treaty square is lit by a hundred torches and the Midnight Chorus fills it from wall to wall — a swirling, singing, howling mass of ecstatic bodies. The treaty dais is visible at the far end, the amphora of accord gleaming on its pedestal. But there are three princes visible in the crowd. Three men in identical merchant cloaks, the same build and hair, each surrounded by a ring of revelers who echo whatever the man says. The real Lykon is somewhere in there, probably terrified, possibly already touched by the mania. The Bacchic Bull-Mask stands at the dais steps — a massive figure in a bronze horned mask, possessed by something old and very strong, arms spread in welcome. The dawn bell will ring in forty minutes.
This is a mercy-boss encounter. The Midnight Chorus is not a god — it is a swarm-avatar of divine revel, animated by the crowd's ecstasy and the lingering pressure of a three-day festival. It can be dispersed, sobered, out-sung, or driven off; it cannot be killed without collateral consequences. The Bacchic Bull-Mask's possessed mortal survives nonlethal damage and is freed when reduced to 0 HP that way — the party loses a potential witness and gains a massacre charge if they use lethal force.
🗺 Terrain
Public square (80×60 ft, difficult terrain in crowd zones) · treaty dais (elevated 5 ft, center-far) · amphora stacks (half cover, flammable) · balcony musicians (20 ft elevation, three exits) · fountain (center, 10-ft pool, slippery rim).
Mechanics
- Crowd zones (initiative 20): The crowd surges — 1d4 zones shift each round. Creatures in a surging zone make DC 14 STR save or are pushed 5 ft in a random direction and have their speed halved until their next turn.
- Identifying the real prince: DC 15 Insight (advantage if Thyia is adjacent — she knows his tells); or use the Dry Cup before shattering it (automatic identification, cup survives for Enc 3 payoff if not used here; spend it now = identification but no sober hush).
- Non-combat options: (1) DC 16 Performance counter-song sustained for 3 rounds disperses the Chorus without violence — each round of sustained counter-song reduces Chorus HP by 40 and prevents it using Legendary Actions that round. (2) Thyia can spend her action to invoke Dionysus by name with true reverence (DC 15 Religion) — Chorus pauses one round. (3) Breaking the Dry Cup at the dais creates a 30-ft sober hush for 1 round: all fey glamours end, the real prince is revealed, the Chorus loses its Legendary Actions that round.
- APL 10 Deadly pressure: The Midnight Chorus (CR 11 · HP 205 · AC 17) has 3 Legendary Actions. Add the Bacchic Bull-Mask (CR 7 · HP 110) as a second active threat at the dais — the party cannot reach the treaty amphora while the Bull-Mask holds the steps. Budget: 205×1 + 110×1 = ~315 effective XP before multiplier. Apply the Retaliation Wave if earned in Enc 2. Sober/disperse the Chorus rather than kill it for full narrative resolution.
- Victory requires the real prince standing sober on the dais, alive, when the dawn bell rings. A prince who drank during the chaos is not disqualified but the treaty is weakened (DM: negotiated partial success).
