The Mill of Midas

For 6 level 7 PCs, 3 to 3.5 hours, 3 encounters. Cure the king if possible.

📜 Session Summary

Style Urban curse investigation where greed, panic, and quarantine are more dangerous than blades.
Win Condition Midas is cured or contained, the millstone is cracked, and the market keeps enough food and trust to recover.
Loss Condition The golden touch becomes a civic plague; bread, coin, and bodies turn beautiful and useless.
Players 6 × Level 10 · 3–3.5 hrs · 3 encounters
Key Ally Philon the Coin-Shaver (recruit Enc. 1 or Enc. 2) · Maguffin: Clay Loaf of Pact-Breaking
Setting A Phrygian market city under divine-curse quarantine — gold-streaked fountains, sealed bread stalls, guards enforcing cordons, and the royal mill grinding at the center of it all
Atmosphere The smell of flour and fear; a city where the economic engine has turned against its people; the horror is not of blood but of creeping uselessness — gold where food should be
Materials Clay Loaf of Pact-Breaking prop (grey loaf description card with inscription); optional flour-dusted receipt handout from the first sealed stall; Midas’s sealed apology letter for Enc. 2
Tone Civic tragedy with monster-fighting as secondary; the session is about what happens when a king’s wish destroys the thing he loves; dark but recoverable — the best outcomes require mercy

Description

The golden curse started at the mill three days ago. By now, the Saffron Gate market quarter is under quarantine: bread stalls sealed, guards at every corner, a child trying to trade a golden apple for a loaf of bread no one can eat. Queen Damodice approaches the party quietly, without fanfare, with a king’s signet pressed into her palm because Midas’s own fingers are currently wrapped in linen to keep him from touching the walls. She needs this solved before the city starves or riots, and she cannot use the palace guard because the palace guard is afraid of what they’ll touch.

The first two encounters are an investigation through a market coming apart at the seams: quarantine guards, sealed ledgers, gold-streaked walls, frightened merchants, and an Auric Homunculus trail leading back to the royal mill. Philon the Coin-Shaver is the party’s best local contact — a fence and street guide who knows the quarter’s hidden economy and has a sister with a sealed stall. He doesn’t want to be a hero. He can be convinced.

The Clay Loaf of Pact-Breaking is the session’s MacGuffin: a gray loaf that smells of rain, ash, and honest work — the literal opposite of Midas’s curse. Its inscription tells the party what it does when they’re standing in front of the millstone. The final encounter is about separating Midas from the possessing spirit Avarice in the Millstone without letting either destroy what’s left of the market.

DM Notes: Midas is a protected objective — make this clear through Damodice before Enc. 3. Murder is possible but loses the session. The Riot Clock is the session’s pressure engine; let players feel it. At APL10 Harder, Avarice starts with legendary resistance and a second Goldmask Bread Warden joins in Round 2.

"A flour-dusted receipt stamped with a gold thumbprint and a list of missing bakers."— Recovered from the first sealed stall

Key NPCs

👑

Queen Damodice — Quest Giver

Regal, composed, and frightened in the way that competent people are frightened — quietly, without letting it show, which is worse. She loves Midas. She is also watching her city die. Secret: Midas ordered the mill reopened after the first warning because the city needed bread. She knew, and she let it happen, and she will carry that.

Roleplay: She will not sanction murdering Midas while a cure remains possible — hard rule, non-negotiable. DC 13 WIS (Insight) shows she’s holding her composure together through will alone. DC 15 CHA (Persuasion) gets her to share that Midas ordered the mill reopened; she deflects until pressed. She gives the party the royal signet freely — it can end a confrontation with any city guard. Quote: "He is still my husband. Find a way that doesn’t end with him dead in his own mill."

🪙

Philon the Coin-Shaver — Recruitable Ally

A fence, street guide, and reluctant public witness. He knows the Saffron Gate quarter better than anyone because he has been quietly profiting from its shadow economy for years. He has a sister with a sealed bread stall and a very strong personal interest in the market reopening. He does not want to be a hero. Secret: He has been smuggling essentials in through the quarantine cordon and charging twice the normal rate. He is also feeding his poorest neighbors for free. He will not admit either.

Recruit: Protect his sister’s stall from the mob or the Wardens (DC 13 persuasion or direct action), expose a profiteer shaking down quarantine victims (DC 14 investigation to find the evidence), or promise amnesty for his cordon smuggling (DC 14 CHA Persuasion with the queen’s signet as backing). Once recruited, he acts on party initiative and provides advantage on all street-level Stealth and Persuasion checks in the quarter.

Major Beats

  • A child tries to trade a golden apple for bread no one can eat.
  • Midas speaks through a door with both hands tied in linen.
  • A market bell turns to gold mid-ring and keeps vibrating.
  • The millstone whispers prices for every heroic compromise.

Encounter 1 — Quarantine at the Saffron Gate

Hard · ~50 min · Hard if mob spawns (~10,800 XP)

Overview

The Saffron Gate is wrong in the specific way that prosperous places are wrong when they stop working: stalls sealed mid-sale, bread left in baskets no one will touch because the baskets are gold, a fountain that runs water-clear but whose rim shines as if someone gilded it in the night. The guard cordon is nervous — men blocking a street with spears and no idea what they’re actually blocking for. The crowd outside presses against them not with anger yet, just pressure — the specific pressure of people who need to eat and are being told they can’t. A child sits on the wrong side of the cordon with a golden apple, trying to trade it for bread. No one takes it. The apples weigh nothing.

Navigate guards, frightened merchants, and gold-touched evidence to find where the curse trail leads — without adding a riot to the problem.

🗺 Terrain

Market gate, sealed bread stalls, gold-streaked fountain, guard cordon, rooftops for stealth entry. Riot Clock tracks social pressure — 3 failures triggers the Gilded Panic Mob.

Mechanics

Non-Combat Options
  • Social: Persuade guards, calm merchants, expose profiteers — avoid the Gilded Panic Mob.
  • Stealth: Rooftop entry bypasses the cordon; Clay Loaf reveals curse-tracks without a riot.
  • Recruitment: Protect civilians or offer Philon amnesty to recruit him for Enc. 2–3.
  • Run a 4-success DC 15 challenge with Persuasion, Insight, Investigation, Medicine, or Stealth.
  • Failures increase the Riot clock; at 3 marks the Gilded Panic Mob surges.
  • Clay Loaf reveals curse-tracks from touched bread to the royal mill.
  • Recruit Philon by protecting civilians or using him as a guide instead of a scapegoat.

Encounter 2 — The Counting House Crawl

Hard · ~55 min · ~10,800 XP if full combat

Overview

The counting house smells of flour, old wax, and something metallic underneath — the same wrong-metal smell as the Saffron Gate, fainter here, coming from the flour stores on the ground floor. The ledger room upstairs is locked; a city Warden stands at the base of the stairs with orders to let no one through. Through a high window, the bridge to the royal mill is visible: a covered walkway forty feet over the street, its planks gold-sheened where the curse has walked across them.

Three clue nodes connect the counting house to the mill: contaminated flour in the sealed bins, Midas’s own sealed apology letter in the locked ledger room, and coin dust from the millstone on the floor of the bridge access. Follow them, avoid or convert the Wardens, and box in the Auric Homunculi before they carry news back to the millstone.

🗺 Terrain

Two-story counting house, flour hoist, locked ledger room, bridge to the royal mill — ~60×40 ft per floor; bridge 10 ft wide, 40 ft long, covered.

Mechanics

Non-Combat Options
  • Stealth: Bypass Wardens via flour hoist or upper windows.
  • Social: Convert Wardens with queen's signet or Midas's sealed apology letter.
  • Calm/convert: Box in Homunculi without killing them; Clay Loaf absorbs minor golding.
  • Three clue nodes: contaminated flour, Midas's sealed apology, and coin dust from the millstone.
  • Stealth can bypass Wardens; social proof can convert them into a noisy distraction.
  • Auric Homunculi flee toward the mill unless boxed in by clever positioning.
  • A cursed object touched barehanded requires DC 15 Constitution save or disadvantage on Dexterity checks until cleansed.

Encounter 3 — Midas at the Grinding Stone

Deadly · ~85 min · ~16,800 XP effective

Overview

The royal mill is still running. That’s the first wrong thing. The gear-teeth are gold-caked but still turning, and the grinding sound is wrong — too resonant, a subsonic hum that vibrates in the back of the teeth. The floor is covered in a layer of gold dust that catches lamplight and makes the whole room look like the inside of a coin. Midas is in the center, near the millstone, his hands wrapped in linen that has already gone stiff with touching. He is not attacking anyone. He is standing absolutely still with his arms held away from his sides like a man trying not to fall. When he sees the party: "Don’t come closer. Please. I don’t want to — I can’t stop it."

The millstone is not just a millstone. The possessing spirit Avarice in the Millstone is using it as an anchor — and it wants Midas alive as its instrument, not dead. At initiative 20, the millstone golds one object, exit, or 10-foot floor patch unless disrupted. The Clay Loaf of Pact-Breaking is the key: pressed into the stone or Midas’s hands, it makes the curse vulnerable for one round — enough to shatter the possession if the party is ready. Victory can be cure, containment, or shattering Avarice; murdering Midas is technically possible and is a bitter loss.

🗺 Terrain

Royal mill floor — ~70×50 ft; turning gears, flour pits, gold-crusted sluice, locked viewing gallery. Gold dust on floor = difficult terrain; gears can be disrupted (Athletics DC 15, stops millstone pulse for 2 rounds).

Mechanics

Non-Combat Options
  • Cure path: Feed Midas the Clay Loaf; isolate and speak to him each round he resists the curse.
  • Containment: Disrupt gears (Athletics DC 15) to pause millstone pulses while negotiating.
  • Convert Wardens: Goldmask Bread Wardens stand down if shown proof of the true source.
  • Midas is a protected objective: if isolated and spoken to, he spends his turn resisting the curse.
  • At initiative 20, the millstone golds one object, exit, or 10-foot floor patch unless disrupted.
  • Maguffin payoff: feed the Clay Loaf into the stone or Midas's hands to make the curse vulnerable for 1 round.
  • Victory can be cure, containment, or shattering the possessing Avarice; murdering Midas counts as a bitter loss.

Reward Cards

Post-session keepables. Reward is the first tag. Mechanics below are for ongoing use after this oneshot.

◈

Ashen Loaf Charm

Reward · Wondrous · 1/Long Rest

Mechanics. Once per long rest, as a reaction when you or an ally within 10 feet would be affected by a curse, petrification-to-metal effect, or Midas-like greed magic, you can cause that effect to fail against that creature. While carried, you have advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks to detect greed-driven lies or cursed coin.

Appearance. A thumb-sized gray loaf charm on a baker's twine, smelling of rain, ash, and honest flour.

Lore. The loaf was spent breaking Midas's pact; this charm is the crumb that refused to turn to gold.

Quote. "Gold cannot eat. Gold cannot knead. Feed the king what wealth refuses." — Clay Loaf handout

Earn when: Feed the Clay Loaf into the mill or Midas's hands and break the golden contagion's grip.
