Description
The Sibylline Books are the most politically dangerous texts in the ancient world: Rome’s official future, maintained by a priestly college, consulted in crisis. The last page of the newest volume has gone missing in the oracle caves of Cumae, and Lucius Varron — a Roman envoy with careful eyes and a carefully incomplete explanation — needs it recovered before a rival faction finds it first. He will not admit the mission is political until the first false page crumbles and someone pushes for honesty.
The caves are not empty. Seven doors open onto smoke-carved corridors where false futures try to split the party. Bronze masks recite contradictory prophecies. An Ember-Lamia is trying to steal the page for her own archives. And Amelia — a cave-born oracle fragment who speaks in a girl’s voice and knows things she shouldn’t — begs the party to trust her reading over the official masks’ version. She is right. The session’s emotional spine is who the party chooses to believe.
The Laurel-Ash Phial is the MacGuffin: a glass tear of gray ash and green sparks that reveals hidden verse and can freeze the burn clock. The final encounter runs against a countdown — the burn clock starts at 6. Victory means reading the true future aloud at the moon well before the cave seals.
DM Notes: Lucius’s political agenda is a betrayal beat — let players discover it through investigation. The burn clock is a pressure device; track it openly. At APL10 Harder, the Pyre-Voice uses legendary resistance once, the Ember-Lamia enters at initiative 15 in Round 2, and the burn clock starts at 5.
Key NPCs
Lucius Varron of Misthaven — Quest Giver
Roman envoy, careful eyes, incomplete explanations. Presents the mission as a recovery operation for a misplaced sacred text. Secret: The mission is political — he represents a faction that wants the page’s content controlled before a rival faction finds it. He will not say this until the first false page crumbles and the party pushes for honesty.
Roleplay: Starts formal and precise. DC 14 WIS (Insight) shows he’s choosing his words very carefully. DC 16 CHA (Persuasion) or showing him evidence of the rival faction’s involvement gets the full truth. Once exposed, he is remarkably pragmatic: “All right. Yes. Find it before they do. The prophecy itself is not the issue — control of it is.” Quote: “The page is property of the Sibylline College. We want it back.”
Amelia the Younger Voice — Recruitable Ally
A cave-born oracle fragment who speaks in a girl’s voice. She exists inside the caves only — she has no memory of the outside. She knows the page’s true content and has been trying to tell someone for years; everyone who comes into the caves listens to the Bronze Masks instead. Secret: She is the last genuine prophetic echo of the Sibyl herself, not a separate entity. The Bronze Masks’ interpretations are politically edited versions; Amelia’s is the original. Lucius knows this and is why he doesn’t want her version leaving the cave.
Recruit: Defend her reading for one full round during the Enc. 2 mask debate (requires actively rejecting the Bronze Mask’s version), or hand her the laurel scrap from the handout (auto-recruit). Once recruited: she grants advantage on any Investigation or Religion check in the caves and her reaction adds +1d6 to prophecy skill checks. DC 15 WIS (Insight) in Enc. 2 detects that she is the original voice, not an interpretation.
Major Beats
- Lucius admits the mission is political only after the first false page crumbles.
- The caves answer lies with doors that open onto the party's memories.
- Amelia's young voice contradicts the official masks.
- The finale asks whether the future must be saved whole or carried as ash.

Encounter 1 — Seven Doors Under Cumae
Overview
The cave entrance is cold and smells of laurel smoke and wet stone. The first chamber splits into seven corridors — each door labeled in ancient Greek, each one exhaling a slightly different quality of smoke. The smoke is not natural. It moves against the draft and seems to watch. Ankle-deep water covers the floor; in the lamplight it reflects the ceiling perfectly, creating the disorienting impression that there is no floor at all, only a second cave below.
The false futures start immediately: a wrong door opens onto a vision of a character’s personal fear or memory rather than the cave beyond. The party has one actual trail to follow — the real smoke-track from the page — and four fake ones designed to divide and delay. Track the page before the burn clock starts dropping.
🗺 Terrain
Forked cave hall with seven labeled doors, ankle-deep water, laurel roots, smoke vents — ~80×40 ft main hall; each door opens to a 20-ft corridor.
Mechanics
- Investigation challenge: 5 successes before 3 failures at DC 15 finds the real smoke trail.
- Each failure costs 5 minutes and animates a Smoke-Warden patrol.
- The Laurel-Ash Phial reveals one hidden verse and cancels one false-door consequence.
- Non-combat route: cite the correct verse to make the acolytes kneel and open Door IV.

Encounter 2 — The Masked Interpretations
Overview
The archive chamber is round and high-ceilinged, its walls lined with bronze masks hanging on iron hooks — dozens of them, all slightly different faces, all of them speaking. Not loudly: a low, overlapping murmur of competing futures. In the center, a cracked lectern holds the sealed page niche. The Ember-Lamia Archivist is already here, examining the niche with the careful attention of someone who knows what she’s looking at. The masks do not acknowledge her. They are focused on the party.
From a side passage: Amelia’s voice, insistent and young, telling the party not to listen to the masks. Three of the masks are offering mutually exclusive versions of the same prophecy — one is deliberately corrupted to serve a political agenda. The party must identify which version is the real one and open the niche, while the Bronze Masks try to drive them toward false doors and the Ember-Lamia weighs her options.
🗺 Terrain
Round archive, hanging masks, cracked lectern, black-water channel, sealed page niche — ~50 ft diameter; channel 5 ft wide; Bronze Masks cannot cross running water.
Mechanics
- Debate or fight three interpretations; Insight/Religion DC 16 identifies the one that eats the future.
- Recruit Amelia by defending her reading for one full round or giving her the laurel scrap.
- A Bronze Mask can possess a PC until splashed with channel water or beaten on a contested Charisma check.
- Correctly ordering three lines opens the niche without adding heat to the page.

Encounter 3 — The Last Page Burns Forward
Overview
The page is burning. Not dramatically — slowly, from one edge, like a document someone left near a candle. The Cumaean Pyre-Voice is the cave’s own memory of every prophecy that was burned rather than read: centuries of suppressed futures condensed into a hazard spirit that wants nothing to happen. It does not want the page carried out. It does not want the prophecy spoken at the moon well. It especially does not want Amelia to reach the surface.
The burn clock counts down from 6. Every round at initiative 20, it drops by 1. At 0, the page is gone and the cave seals. The Laurel-Ash Phial can freeze the clock for 2 rounds or reveal which of the three prophecy doors leads to the moon well. Victory means reaching the moon well with the page and reading the true future aloud before the ash closes in — killing the Pyre-Voice only buys one round; the cave seals regardless unless the prophecy resolves.
🗺 Terrain
Ascending lava-lit stair, three prophecy doors, falling roots, moon well exit — stair ~80 ft long, 10 ft wide; three branches at top; moon well 30 ft across. Lava vents open at stair midpoint on burn clock 3 (difficult terrain, 2d6 fire per round without cover).
Mechanics
- Burn clock starts at 6; at initiative 20 reduce it by 1, or by 2 after a failed group save.
- The Laurel-Ash Phial freezes the clock for 2 rounds or reveals which exit matches Amelia's verse.
- Win by reading the true future aloud at the moon well, bargaining with the Ember-Lamia, or escaping with preserved ash.
- Killing the Pyre-Voice only buys 1 round; the cave still seals unless the prophecy is resolved.
