The Bronze Heart of Crete

One-Shot · 6 Players · Average Level 8 · Greek Mythology · ~3.5 hrs / 3 Encounters
Style: Infiltration & Shutdown-the-Colossus  |  Win Condition: Reach the Ichor Heart inside Talos and complete the shutdown sequence before the colossus reaches the harbor  |  Setting: The port village of Amnisos, Crete, and the animated interior of the Bronze Talos.

The party's trireme makes landfall at Amnisos just as the bronze colossus Talos, guardian of Crete, lurches to life and begins rampaging toward the coast. A disguised smith warns them its ichor-heart has been corrupted, and only someone who can reach the valve inside its chest can shut it down without destroying it forever.

"You smell the forge before you see the man — soot to the elbows, a burn-scarred grin. 'Kadmos,' he says, extending a hand like tempered iron. 'The giant on the ridge is not attacking Crete. Something is hurting it, and it doesn't know how to scream except with its fists. I need someone small enough to climb inside its chest and quiet its heart before it reaches the harbor.'"
Maguffin — The Aegis Pin: Kadmos presses a cold bronze nail into your palm, etched with spiraling script. Attached is a scrap of hide reading: "Seek the ichor-valve at heart or heel. Turn the pin thrice. The bronze giant will sleep, not die." (Full card, Page 4.)

Major Beats

  1. Trireme lands at Amnisos; party meets Kadmos (Hephaestus in disguise) at the dockside tavern, the Drowned Anchor.
  2. Kadmos explains Talos's ichor-heart has been corrupted and hands over the Aegis Pin.
  3. Encounter 1: Amnisos village is under attack by a rampaging Chalkotauros (bronze bull sentinel); scholar Ikara is trapped under rubble.
  4. Villagers point the party toward Talos's fallen heel-hatch, ground into the shoreline by its own weight.
  5. Encounter 2: Party climbs the internal clockwork shaft from heel to torso, past Bronze Sentries and steam hazards; may free the bound construct Kyros.
  6. Party reaches the torso access hatch and descends into the Ichor Heart chamber.
  7. Encounter 3 (Boss): Party defends the Ichor Valve from Legionnaire constructs and the Talos Overseer for 3 shutdown successes within 8 rounds.
  8. Success: Talos kneels and powers down on the shoreline, intact but dormant — Crete is safe, and legend gains a new chapter.

Encounters

Encounter 1 — The Bull in the Streets

Style: Skirmish w/ Non-Lethal Option  |  Win Condition: Stop the Chalkotauros and free Ikara  |  Difficulty: Moderate  |  Terrain: Amnisos village street, 80×60 ft; overturned carts/nets = difficult terrain & half cover; collapsed well pins Ikara.
Success — Bull disabled/destroyed and Ikara rescued: she joins as an ally (advantage on Investigation/Arcana in Encounters 2–3; skips one hazard in Encounter 2).
Partial — Bull defeated but Ikara not freed within 3 rounds: she survives but only gives info, does not join.

Encounter 2 — The Clockwork Ascent

Style: Environmental Hazard + Avoidable Guardian Skirmish  |  Win Condition: Reach the torso access hatch  |  Difficulty: Moderate  |  Terrain: Vertical gear shaft, 40 ft spiral gantry; steam vents erupt every 3 rounds (init count 20) — DC 13 Dex save or 2d6 fire; rotating gear-plate floor sections are difficult terrain.
Aftermath — Kyros freed: joins the party; in Encounter 3 it can auto-succeed one shutdown check (once) or grant advantage on the reaction vs. Overcharge Core. Sentries bypassed via valves: party gets a surprise round entering Encounter 3.

Encounter 3 — The Ichor Heart (Boss)

Style: Defend-the-Ritual  |  Win Condition: 3 cumulative shutdown-check successes at the Ichor Valve using the Aegis Pin within 8 rounds  |  Difficulty: Hard  |  Terrain: Circular vault, 60 ft diameter; rotating gear-plates (init 20, DC 12 Dex save or slide 10 ft); ruptured wall conduits deal 1d8 fire or lightning (DM's choice by color) on touch; central dais holds the Ichor Valve.
Success — 3 successes land within 8 rounds: Talos kneels and powers down on the shoreline, dormant but intact. All constructs go inert immediately.
Failure — 8 rounds elapse: Talos completes its lurch into the harbor, destroying the party's trireme and part of the docks. Party must flee the collapsing chamber — DC 13 Dex save each round or take 2d6 bludgeoning from falling debris. No deaths required, but stakes escalate for any sequel.

Item & NPC Reference

Key Item

The Aegis Pin

A cold bronze nail etched with spiraling script, given by Kadmos at the outset.

NPC Quick Reference

Kadmos (Hephaestus in disguise)

  • Role: Quest giver, dockside smith at the Drowned Anchor tavern in Amnisos.
  • Motivation: Wants Talos disabled, not destroyed — he forged it and refuses to let it be slain like a common beast.
  • Secret: He is Hephaestus in mortal disguise; reveals this only if directly confronted with divine-detecting magic or if the party succeeds a probing DC 18 Insight check.
  • Roleplay notes: Speaks plainly, undersells his own power, deflects gratitude with dry humor. Will not fight alongside the party — "a god's hand is heavier than it looks."
  • Stat line (if forced to act): Treat as a CR 10 humanoid with resistance to fire and an at-will heat metal-like touch; he will avoid combat whenever possible.

Ikara of Knossos

  • Role: Rescuable artificer-scholar, descendant of Daedalus's workshop apprentices; recruit from Encounter 1.
  • Motivation: Obsessed with proving her lineage's worth by saving Talos rather than watching it be destroyed.
  • Secret: She has partial, half-remembered schematics of Talos's interior — the source of her Encounter 2/3 assistance bonuses.
  • Roleplay notes: Anxious, talks fast when nervous, lights up when given a technical problem to solve.
  • Mechanical benefit: Grants advantage on Investigation/Arcana checks related to Talos's mechanisms in Encounters 2–3 if rescued.
