The Debt of Antaeus
A level 8 borderland boss-hunt against earthbound strength.
Style: Borderland arena survival where clever terrain control matters more than raw damage.
Win: Separate Antaeus from the earth long enough to break the cult's debt rite, freeing captives without claiming Gaia as an enemy.
Lose: The party is pinned into the soil, the cult collects another oath-debt, and the border road becomes a graveled arena.
Maguffin: Sky-Shackle Chain · Ally: Nesra, Caravan Wrestler · QG: Dymas of the Salt Caravan
"A clay debt tablet lists names in wet script. When lifted from the ground, the newest name fades; when set down, it rewrites itself."
Major Beats
- The road itself seems to enforce the cult's crooked contracts.
- Nesra reframes wrestling as leverage, position, and honor rather than damage.
- Every clue says the giant's strength is conditional: feet, soil, debt, repeat.
- Victory is the moment Antaeus has no ground to borrow from.

| Easier | APL 4–6: reduce minion counts ~30%; DCs −2; boss loses one recharge or legendary option. |
| Harder | APL 10–12: boss HP +25–35%; +1 legendary action; add a lieutenant or extra wave. |
ENC 1 — Names in the Road-Dust
Enc 1: Borderland Bargain · ~45 min · Dust road, buried wagons, toll shrine, ring stones, captive pits.
- Non-combat path: challenge the debt rite with Law, Religion, or Performance before a crowd.
- Use the Sky-Shackle to lift a captive or tablet without triggering earth-script.
- Recruit Nesra by freeing her and respecting ring rules.
- Winning by ring-out earns safe approach; killing cultists alerts the boss shrine.
ENC 2 — The Pit That Pulls Back
Enc 2: Skill Challenge Arena · ~60 min · Sunken clay arena, hanging cargo crane, cracked cistern, prayer mound.
- Non-combat path: free captives and rig lifting points with 5 successes before 3 failures.
- Each raised platform becomes safe ground in Encounter 3.
- Clay-Blood rites can be interrupted by removing bowls, tablets, or feet from soil.
- The reluctant ogre can be turned by showing his name remains on the debt tablet.
ENC 3 — No Ground Beneath the Giant
Enc 3: Hard Separation Boss · ~90 min · Huge wrestling ring, raised crane hooks, broken columns, loose slabs, captive edge.
- Hard fight: Antaeus heals and gains advantage while both feet touch earth.
- Win condition: lift, suspend, ring-out onto stone, or otherwise separate him from soil.
- Maguffin payoff: Sky-Shackle suppresses earth-healing during a successful lift or grapple setup.
- Saving captives during the fight denies the cult hostage leverage and grants crane assists.
