The Labyrinth of the Unshapen

One-Shot · 6 Players · Average Level 8 · ~3.5 Hours · Greek Mythology Themed

SESSION SUMMARY

Huntress-priestess Phaedra finds the party and presses a scroll fragment into a player's hand. Theron Amorphos, a disgraced alchemist, is two days from firing his Chrysalid Crucible — pulling the essences of all magical beasts within 100 miles into forced convergence. Cross his stables, thread the ruined garden, destroy the Crucible, and end his work.

"From one of his early papers. He published it himself. He thought it was about the animals." She presses torn papyrus into a player's hand — bronze ink, cut at both ends. The fragment reads only: Break the sigil, break its loyalty. — Phaedra

Major Beats

  1. Tavern Meeting. Phaedra delivers scroll, contract, sketch-map. Investigation DC 13: Theron published taxonomy papers; DC 17: expelled for experimenting on sentient subjects; DC 20: declared dead 12 years ago.
  2. Celestial Stables. Kreon manages 3 Griffins + 2 Pegasi in iron sigil collars. Combat avoidable — charm, deceive, or stealth to free aerial allies for Act 3.
  3. Broken Garden. Skill challenge vs. Manticore / Hippogriff / Chimera patrols — or combat on failure. Cache holds Research Codex. Optional: rescue Thessaly.
  4. Chrysalid Sanctum. Boss fight. Phase 1: squishy summoner on dais. Phase 2: Minotaur transformation (recommended: Contingency Draught).
  5. Resolution. Crucible destroyed; Theron dead, subdued, or escaped. Phaedra arrives within hours.

Scroll Fragment — Phaedra's Handout

Physical Prop · Session Thread

Torn papyrus, bronze ink: "Break the sigil, break its loyalty." From Theron's early paper — he meant a warning; she weaponized it.

Destroy: AC 14 · HP 80. Immediately drops all active summons, prevents further vat activation, weakens Phase 2 Absorb Essence (halve). Priority target — Theron uses Redirect Beast to interpose.

If Theron immerses at ≤40 HP and Crucible is destroyed while he's inside: Phase 2 starts at 80 HP + Disadv on attacks 3 rounds.

Theron's Research Codex

Clay Tablets · Always in Act 2 Cache

1 minute to read. Reveals: (1) Draught of the Labyrinth on left belt; (2) Crucible powers summoning — destroy it; (3) Phase 2 chest sigil disrupts magic. Grants Advantage on first initiative roll of Encounter 3.

NPC QUICK REFERENCE

Phaedra — Quest Giver

  • Role: Elder huntress-priestess of Artemis · NG · sun-dark, grey-haired, economical speech.
  • Motivation: Two seasons tracking creature wrongness (migration, pairing, gathering near ruins). Won't go herself — bad knees; pays well.
  • Knows: Crucible fires in ≤2 days; 100-mile magical-beast radius; scroll is from Theron's early paper.
  • Secret: She commissioned the field survey Theron used as baseline. Insight DC 14 she's withholding. Quote: "He was brilliant. He probably still is. That is the problem."

Theron Amorphos — Antagonist

  • Role: Disgraced alchemist-scholar · LE · gaunt, white-edged hair, stained robes; precise, never raises voice; 3 weeks underground.
  • Motivation: Species separation is a flaw; Crucible is surgery, not cruelty. Correct that something is unraveling — catastrophically wrong about the remedy.
  • If confronted: "You came to stop it. I understand that. But I suspect she didn't tell you what the alternative looks like in another hundred years."
  • Stats: See Phase 1 / Phase 2 cards (p.3). Nonlethal → names ≥2 parallel researchers. Escape → sequel hook.

Kreon the Yoke-Bearer — Henchman

  • Role: Stablemaster · LN · bull horns at temples, oversized hands; volunteered partial transform 11 yrs ago (ex horse-breaker).
  • Motivation: Loyal, methodical, not cruel. Will not surrender — but can be spoken to. If party treats animals with obvious respect, he hesitates before fighting.
  • Roleplay: Non-combat path foreshadows Theron's contingency vial. Stats on p.3.

Thessaly — Optional Rescue

  • Role: Young naturalist · NG · ink-stained fingers, battered notebook; captured investigating creature strangeness.
  • Free: East-wall pen Act 2 — DC 15 Perception; gate sigil AC 10 / 5 HP / DC 10 Athletics or Thieves' Tools.
  • Knows: Overheard Draught location ("left belt, bronze clasp"); counted 4 vats (D forbidden); skylight is natural collapse.
  • Combat (Act 3): AC 11 · HP 14 · Action each round: Help one PC (Adv next attack or skill check).

Resolution & Aftermath

  • Crucible drained; controlled creatures slump/flee; ceiling trembles; Phaedra arrives within hours; beasts return to natural ranges over weeks.
  • If pressed, Phaedra admits commissioning the survey. Theron subdued or escaped seeds a sequel.
