The Weight of Hope

One-Shot · 6 Players · Level 6 · ~3.5 Hours · Greek Mythology
Style: Mythic Quest · Roleplay, Investigation & Combat  |  Win Condition: Seal Pandora's Jar and free the Isle of Anemos — Pandora need not die  |  Setting: Aegean Sea → Isle of Anemos: rocky shore, ruined temple courtyard, underground sanctum.

Zeus — disguised as a salt-weathered sailor named "Dios" — hands the party a sealed clay amphora and cryptic note before they disembark. Pandora has spent centuries haunted by the evils she once loosed; the Jar that began it all stands open in her sanctum, bleeding shadows. Armed with a fragment of divine hope, the party must seal it — by cunning, compassion, or force.

"The gods have wept long enough. What was loosed from that jar has festered for an age. Find the island. Seal the jar. What you carry will tell you how — when the time is right." — "Dios" (Zeus in disguise), aboard the trireme

Major Beats

  1. Zeus/"Dios" hands over the Amphora of Elpis with its sealed note, then departs before the trireme sails.
  2. Aboard ship, blind seer Phaedon shares his prophecy: "The jar does not need a conqueror. It needs a witness."
  3. The Siren Shore: Sirens lure the trireme from the sea-crags — skill challenge to pass, or fight.
  4. Acantha, an Ash Nymph bound to the isle, emerges on shore, offers the Sprig of Asphodel, and warns of the warden ahead.
  5. The Keeper's Gate: Kyros (a cursed scholar-Minotaur) bars the temple with a riddle — solve it, show the Amphora, or fight through.
  6. Pandora's Sanctum: Three Sealing Circles pulse around the open Jar. Pandora attacks, summoning Shadows/Specters — activate the circles, use the Amphora, or persuade her through her grief.
  7. Resolution: The Jar seals; Acantha's curse breaks; a golden eagle descends; Zeus reveals himself.

Note tied to the Amphora (20 words): "What was last to leave the jar awaits return. Do not open until you stand before the source."
World detail: The Jar pedestal inscription (DC 16 History, or read freely by Phaedon): "First to leave were Pestilence and Pain. Last to remain was Hope. The jar closes when hope returns." Zeus cannot intervene directly under divine non-intervention law — he arranged the mission because the gods gave Pandora curiosity and never warned her; he owes her a resolution he cannot personally deliver.

Hard · ~45–60 min · ~5–7 rounds · Four win paths — Pandora need not die  |  Terrain: Underground sanctum, 60 ft diameter, dim light

Win A: activate all 3 Sealing Circles. Win B: use the Amphora at the Jar. Win C: 3× DC 15 Persuasion. Win D (last resort): reduce Pandora to 0 HP.

Resolution A/B/C: Pandora closes the Jar herself, weeping; Acantha's curse breaks; Zeus reveals himself; each PC gains the Blessing of Elpis (advantage on one save, declared before rolling, within 24 hrs).
