Session Mural — The Phikion Frieze
The summit temple's wall remembers this session in three black-figure registers: the shrine trials, the Sphinx's fury, and the rites of the mountain. Hover the thumbnail to preview it, open the table version in a new tab, or print the clean handout. All artwork lives in the Murals gallery.
Description
Thebes sits on the Cadmea in the Boeotian plain, seven gates in its circle of walls. To the north the road climbs Mount Phikion — the Sphinx Mountain of the old stories, the peak from which a riddling lion-woman once taxed every traveler bound for the city. Helicon and the Muses lie west; Cithaeron closes the south. Three nights ago Phikion roared. The North Gate road is empty. Shepherds swear an abandoned temple in the summit cave holds a nest the size of a dragon, and that something in it is worth a city's ransom. Rumors (red herrings): the temple was once Apollo's (art and learning moved to the city); or Ares's (Thebes has not seen war in generations); or an Egyptian god — "Amara," "A-man-raw" — Amun-Ra, patron of a different Thebes (APOLLO and AMUN-RA both have six letters). The magistrate Nikias of Thebes hires the party in the agora: rid Phikion of the Ancient Sphinx, and protect the unnamed treasure within.
🗺 Map — Thebes / Boeotia
Use images/maps/Thebes.png (map-thebes) for the city hook: Agora, Seven Gates, North Gate exit. Point to Mt Helikon on the sheet as the western massif; Phikion is the nearer north peak on the road (not always labeled). Enc. 1–3 are on Phikion itself — switch to the encounter terrain once the party leaves the walls.
On the road, four adolescent sphinxes — three androsphinxes and one gynosphinx — heard that roar and came to feast on anyone foolish enough to try the Ancient's game. They will riddle first. Only a sphinx whose riddle is failed (or who is attacked) joins a fight; the others watch.
The halls beyond are a trap-run. The cavern-temple holds the Great Sphinx — Gargantuan, CR 22 — a race against her patience. Six bronze-plaqued altars use Level 2 riddles; five letters spell a hidden six-letter name and one is a decoy (Ω), revealed when the DM chooses. Six armor-gems telegraph her worst options; cracking them buys the puzzle team time. Shout the name, fetch the Seal, place it on a new central altar — she does not stand down until her patron arrives.
Handout — Theban Writ (read in the agora)
Key NPCs
Nikias of Thebes — Quest Giver
Magistrate of the North Gate, once a caravan-captain on the Phikion road. Late 60s, missing two fingers. He climbed the peak two years ago and came back alive. Secret: Savano spared him for a half-clever answer and took the fingers as tuition. He is ashamed. Offers 1,200 gp and the city's blessing. Quote: "She will ask you something. Answer well — or don't come back to make me bury you inside seven walls."
The Ancient Sphinx (Savano — reveal midway Enc. 3)
Dragon-sized gynosphinx nested in Phikion's abandoned summit cave, four centuries asleep over an unnamed seal. The roar was a yawn. Thebes remembers a younger sphinx on this mountain; she is the older nest-mother who slept through that famous riddle. Refer to her as the Ancient Sphinx or the Great Sphinx until midway through Enc. 3. Secret (DM): her name is Savano — a red herring for the word-puzzle (Greek η≈v, ν≈n, θ≈o). She does not want mortal flesh; she wants the game finished so her patron will visit. The hidden name opens the door; the seal is the invitation.

Major Beats
- Agora of Thebes. Nikias hires the party at the civic hub inside the Seven Gates; writ + 1,200 gp on return; rumor of a nest-treasure on Phikion.
- Enc. 1 — Road of Four Riddles. Goat-road from the North Gate up Mount Phikion. Four adolescent sphinxes. Answer for hints; fail and that one attacks.
- Enc. 2 — Trapped Ascent. Stair and halls cut into the peak: plates, darts, false floors, crush-ceiling, riddle-door.
- Enc. 3 — Summit cavern-temple. Six altars, six armor-gems, end-of-round riddles, cipher thirds. Shout the hidden name, then place the Seal on the new central altar.
- Resolution / Epilogue. Patron goddess arrives; Savano stands down and sends the brood off the mountain; Thebes pays in full and throws a banquet.
Encounter 1 — Road of Four Riddles
Overview
The party leaves Thebes by the North Gate. The Phikion road switchbacks above olive terraces; the Cadmea shrinks behind them, Helicon a blue mass to the west. Four winged shapes drop onto the stones ahead — lion-bodies, human faces, not yet the size of the thing that roared. Three males, one female. They have been waiting for travelers on the Sphinx Mountain.
"The Ancient yawned," says the largest, Kleitos. "So we came to eat whoever tries her game. Or — if you are amusing — we will tell you what the mountain already knows."
- Style: Four sequential riddle contests; combat is per-sphinx, not a chorus
- Win: Survive the road with as many hints as you earned
The Four
- Kleitos — androsphinx, eldest · Hint: six altars want deeds, not only words
- Phaedros — androsphinx, scarred ear · Hint: the path and halls are trapped; watch the floor
- Orthos — androsphinx, youngest · Hint: keep a reaction for the Ancient's end-of-round question
- Ismene — gynosphinx · Hint: the last word that ends the game has six letters
Creatures (only if unsatisfied)
- 3× Peak-Brood Androsphinx — CR 7 (2,900)
- 1× Ismene — CR 6 (2,300)
1 fight ≈ Easy; 2 ≈ Medium; all 4 ≈ Hard for 6×L11.
🗺 Terrain
Phikion switchback 15 ft. wide, 80 ft. long; 40-ft. drop to the terrace (3d6). Boulders: half cover. Thebes visible in the plain on a clear look-back. Sphinxes start 40 ft. ahead, flying available.
Level 1 — Road Riddles (8)
The four smaller sphinxes choose from this bank. One riddle each. Accept variants in parentheses. ~60 seconds. Player cards: Riddle Cards. Four-page table sheet: DM Reference.

| 8 | "Voiceless it cries, wingless it flutters, toothless bites, and mouthless mutters." | Wind |
Riddle Hints (any encounter)
A PC can spend an action studying the plaque, conferring, or reading the sphinx. Roll a skill that fits the riddle (table below). You invent the hint — these DCs only say how obvious it should be. The Clay Tablet of Savano grants advantage on Investigation for riddles.
| Where | Faint (category) | Useful (a property) | Near-giveaway |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enc. 1 — Level 1 road | DC 12 | DC 15 | DC 18 |
| Enc. 3 altars — Level 2 | DC 14 | DC 17 | DC 20 |
| Enc. 3 Great Sphinx — Level 3 | DC 15 | DC 18 | DC 21 |
- Faint: name the domain only — “a light,” “something the sea knows,” “a tool,” “not a creature.”
- Useful: a true property or exclusion — “it has no flame of its own,” “not the sun,” “you can hold it,” “it is spent, not kept.”
- Near-giveaway: a Greek-table picture that almost names it — “what a sailor calls the white in the hold,” “the third leg is a stick.”
Which skill. Pick one that matches the riddle; Insight always works to read the asker. Typical asks: Nature/Survival (river, wind, star, sun, lightning, bee, honey, salt, sail, oar, torch, coal); History/Religion (mortal, name, time, silence, dreams, life); Investigation/Arcana (cipher, key, secret, riddle, mirror, echo); Insight/Medicine (secret, tears, life); Performance (echo, riddle); Athletics (hammer).
Resolution
Encounter 2 — The Trapped Ascent
Near the summit the Phikion road pinches into a stair cut from living rock, then a colonnade that should not exist this high — a hallway into the peak. Bronze nails in the lintel still hold faded Theban ribbon and a worn stamp (owl-shaped, meaning long forgotten). Something has been maintaining this place.
Run as a gauntlet of five stations (plus optional sixth). Each station is one "round" of spotlight. Phaedros's hint grants advantage on the first Perception/Investigation to spot a trigger.
Trap Stations
| # | Station | Spot / Disarm | On Failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Goat-stair plates | Perception DC 15; disable Thieves' Tools or Athletics DC 14 (wedge) | Darts: +8 to hit, 14 (4d6) poison, DC 15 Con or poisoned 1 min |
| 2 | False ledge | Survival or Investigation DC 14 | 10-ft. slide, 3d6 bludgeoning, prone; DC 13 Dex half |
| 3 | Hall of hollow tiles | Investigation DC 16 (or 13 with a 10-ft. pole) | Fall 20 ft. onto spikes, 4d6 piercing; Athletics DC 14 to climb out (action) |
| 4 | Crush ceiling | Perception DC 15 (hairline crack); Athletics DC 16 brace or Mage Hand on the pin | 8d10 bludgeoning, Dex DC 16 half, in a 10-ft. square |
| 5 | Riddle-locked bronze door | Speak any Enc. 1 answer already used, or knock / thieves' tools DC 16, or Strength DC 20 | Glyph: 6d8 thunder, Con DC 15 half; door still shut until opened |
| 6* | Optional: bronze net alcove | Stealth DC 14 past tripwire | Restrained, escape DC 14; 2d6 piercing as barbs close |
Encounter 3 — Temple of the Ancient Sphinx
Overview
The summit cave is a cathedral in the peak of Phikion. A crack in the roof shows open Boeotian sky — wind, not a cellar. Columns like tree-trunks hold a ceiling lost in smoke-stained dark. Six raised platforms ring a sand floor. On each, a stone altar wears a bronze plaque. At the far end a wall of living rock has been carved into a sleeping lion the size of a dragon — until the lion opens its eyes.
The Great Sphinx unfolds. She is Gargantuan. The roar you heard in town was her stretching. Do not use her personal name until midway through the encounter (see Name Reveal). To her this is all a game: she relishes their fear and speaks with a bravado that dares them to challenge her. "Four centuries," she says, almost kindly. "Play my game. Fail, and I remember I am hungry."
- True win: Collect the letters, shout the hidden six-letter name (bonus action, one word — see cipher). The rear wall opens and the Seal is revealed — she does not stand down yet. A central altar rises. Fetch the seal and place it. Her patron appears; Savano becomes friendly. See The Seal and Epilogue.
- Stall: two or three PCs crack the six armor-gems so the puzzle team can finish the altars. Fighting her body is still a losing clock.
🗺 Phikion Summit Temple — ~120×80 ft.
- Sand orchestra (center): 40-ft. circle; Savano occupies a 20-ft. space; difficult terrain except for her.
- Six platforms: 10-ft. squares, 5 ft. high, 25 ft. apart around the ring. Climbing onto one is 5 ft. of movement (no roll) or a jump.
- Altars: activating a plaque is an action. When the DM reveals a letter, taking the parchment is a bonus action — letters are not bound to a specific riddle.
- Columns: three-quarters cover; she can drop one as a lair legendary action.
- Rear wall: sealed until the hidden name is spoken. Then a compartment opens (the Seal). A seventh altar rises in the sand — see The Seal.
- Armor-gems: six Large crystals on her hide. Telegraph her options; AC 17; nonmagical weapons work. See Armor-Gems.
- Optional traps in the room: two sand-sink tiles (Dex DC 15 or restrained, escape DC 14) between platforms 2–3 and 5–6; one dart slit on the north wall (same as Enc. 2 station 1) if a PC sprints the straight line.
Name Reveal — Savano
Until midway through Enc. 3, refer to her only as the Ancient Sphinx or the Great Sphinx. Her personal name is Savano — a deliberate red herring for the word-puzzle (Greek letter shapes: η like v, ν like n, θ like o — players may think Savano anagrams toward the answer).
She reveals Savano dramatically when either:
- The party has gathered 2–3 letters from the altars, or
- A PC succeeds on Investigation or Arcana DC 16 (chamber carvings), History DC 15 (old Theban graffiti), or Persuasion/Intimidation DC 17 to extract it from her in conversation.
She offers the name as if it were vital to the puzzle — it is not. Line: "You pry at my name? Savano. Carve it if you like — the wall wants something older."
Riddle / Puzzle — Action Economy
Enforce these at the table to limit table-talk and give each player room to think. Full table also on DM Reference p. 3.
| Activity | Cost | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Read altar plaque silently | Free (adjacent) | Only you know the text until you share it. |
| Read a riddle aloud to the table | Action | You get the first answer attempt; others must wait. |
| Attempt an altar riddle answer | Action | At that altar; one try per riddle per PC. |
| Perform altar activation (after correct answer) | Action | Solving and activating are separate steps. |
| Take a revealed letter parchment | Bonus action | Letters are timed by the DM — not bound to a specific riddle. |
| Share a new letter with the group | Reaction | Required when you learn one — otherwise only you know it. |
| Roll for a hint | Action | One try per riddle per PC; see Riddle Hints. |
| Answer Savano's end-of-round riddle | Reaction | Must still have a reaction; one voice; no conferring. |
| Shout help when another PC read aloud | Reaction | You forfeit answering Savano's riddle this round. |
| Guess the hidden six-letter word | Bonus action, end of round only | One guess per round for the whole party. Wrong → free claw legendary. |
| Discuss word-puzzle answers | — | Only during the end-of-round pause (~30 sec). No mid-round table-talk. |
| Fetch the Seal / place on central altar | Action each | After the correct word is shouted. |
| Present the Seal to Savano (alternate) | Action | See Alternate Ending — gems shatter; Broken Form fight. |
Dialogue Suggestions
Read these as invitation, not lecture. She is hunting and hosting at once. Pick one when the cue hits; do not stack three in a row. The secret under the bravado: she wants the name and the seal so Athena will visit. She is sated by the game, not by flesh.
| When | Line (read aloud) |
|---|---|
| They enter / she unfolds | "So thoughtful of you to deliver yourselves to me — what God have I pleased that such a feast greets me in my own home?" |
| Truesight; someone is invisible or hidden | "Your scent would be enough to find you, intruder — but you cannot hide from my gaze!" |
| First fail, first fear, or first blood | "Oh, what a poor and cruel fate for such young souls. Come all this way just to work your ways back down to Hades, through my belly — a tragic end for pitiful mortals." |
| They attack her / melee | "Come, strike me with those mighty muscles of yours! It will help me savor every sinew of your flesh as I rend it from your bones. I can almost taste it." |
| They stall, flee, or try to forfeit | "You wouldn't forfeit your lives so easily, would you? I've waited over 400 years for this hunt — I will not be denied my satisfaction!" |
| Correct combat riddle | "A spark. Don't let me start hoping — hope is how I season the meat." |
| Wrong answer, or no one has a reaction | "Silence is an answer. I have eaten better ones." |
| Someone runs for an altar | "Fuss with the furniture if you must. I will still be here when you are finished being clever." |
| She takes a real hit | "Yes! Again! Make it mean something before I swallow the story of you." |
| Round 6 warning | "The sand grows dull. Finish your puzzle, little guests — or I finish the guests." |
| Round 8, weary | "I am weary of the chase. Speak the word that puts me back to sleep, or I unmake the room." |
| Wrong one-word shout | "A pretty noise. Not the one that buys you dawn." |
| Brood cubs arrive | "Children — keep them off the stones. Mother is still playing." |
| A PC drops | "Down already? Stand. I have not given you permission to be boring." |
| They bargain, pray, or offer gold | "Gold? Prayers? I have Thebes under my mountain and four centuries of appetite. Offer me a better game." |
| A gem cracks | "Ah! You found the jewelry. Break another — I like a guest who reads the room." |
| A gem is destroyed | "Gone. Good. I have been wearing that one too long." |
| Name reveal (midway) | "You pry at my name? Savano. Carve it if you like — the wall wants something older." |
| Hidden name spoken (seal phase) | "Grey-eyed. Yes. That was the password — not the ending. Fetch what she left me, and put it where a friend would put it." |
| Seal presented to her (alternate) | "Bold. You offer a god's gift to me? Then earn what's left without my crown." |
| Broken Form at 0 HP | (stumbles) "…By the seal she gave me… let her see this through." |
The Clock
- Initiative: roll. She uses melee and cooldown spells to punish clusters and anyone ignoring altars. She does not camp a single altar unless a PC is mid-activation.
- End of every round: Savano poses a combat riddle (bank below). Only a PC who still has a reaction may answer (no conferring — one voice). Correct: one-third of the wall-cipher appears, and all PCs have advantage on saves vs. her until the end of the next round. Wrong / no eligible answer: all PCs have disadvantage on those saves for the next round.
- Cipher thirds: (1) Greek letters Α Θ Η Ν Α fade onto the wall. (2) Transliteration A-THE-NA. (3) "The grey-eyed one who won the city."
- Patience: End of round 8 she says she is weary. End of round 10, if the hidden name has not been spoken, she uses Word of Unmaking on every PC in the cave (TPK-adjacent) — unless the Back gem is destroyed, in which case she cannot. Warn at round 6. The back gem flashes at the start of that round.
- Shout: Bonus action, one word, must be heard. The correct six-letter name (see cipher) opens the rear wall and starts the seal phase — it does not end the fight. Other words: she laughs and a claw legendary is free.
- Gems: intended stall. Two or three strikers on gems, one or two on support, two or three on altars. See Armor-Gems.
Optional Pressure
- She calls brood (Harder / if table is steamrolling altars unused): 1–2 Brood Cubs at initiative 20 on round 3. They peel off altar-runners.
- City help (if Enc. 1 was peaceful and Enc. 2 was clean): an acolyte from a forgotten roadside shrine arrives at the cave mouth on round 4 with a torch, a key, a hammer, 1 gp, and a scrap of polished bronze — one free tool delivery, then they hide.
Armor-Gems
Six Large crystals are set in Savano's hide: head, back, each shoulder, each thigh. They are how she shows her hand. Targeting them is the intended way to stall her while the rest of the table runs altars and riddles.
- Separate targets. Declare a gem. Use the Ancient Gem Stone AC (17), not hers (22). Nonmagical weapons hit the gems. A miss does not transfer to her body.
- Reach. Head sits ~15 ft. up (ranged, 10-ft. reach, jump, or fly). Back needs a flank behind her or flight. Shoulders from that side. Thighs from adjacent melee.
- Cracked at 30 HP remaining (24 damage taken). Destroyed at 0. Track Intact / Cracked / Destroyed per gem.
- White-hot reset: when the hidden name is spoken, every gem repairs to 54 HP and Intact. They can be cracked again during the seal phase.
| Gem | Where / Telegraph | Intact | Cracked | Destroyed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solar (red) | Head. Solid red when Solar Tempest is charged. Brightens one step at the end of each of her turns while it recharges. Flashes at the end of the round before she uses it, then goes dark. | 60-ft. cone, DC 21 Dex, 56 (16d6) radiant | 20-ft. cone, DC 18 Dex, 28 (8d6) radiant | Cannot use Solar Tempest |
| Unmaking (violet) | Back. Glows while Word of Unmaking remains available. Flashes at the start of the round she intends to use it, and flashes again if her patience breaks. | 90 ft., DC 21 Con, 66 (12d10) force + prone | 45 ft., DC 18 Con, 33 (6d10) force + prone | Cannot use Word of Unmaking (patience fail becomes melee frenzy instead) |
| Echo (gold) | Right shoulder. Flashes at the start of a PC's turn if she will spend Echo Roar as a legendary action after that turn. | 30-ft. radius, DC 21 Wis, frightened until end of its next turn | 15-ft. radius, DC 18 Wis, same frighten | Cannot use Echo Roar |
| Column (bronze) | Left shoulder. Flashes at the start of her turn on the turn before she knocks a column down. | 10-by-30-ft. line, DC 19 Dex, 44 (8d10) bludgeoning | 5-by-15-ft. line, DC 16 Dex, 22 (4d10) bludgeoning | Cannot use Column Fall |
| Sand (ochre) | Right thigh. Flashes before a PC takes their movement if she will use Swallowing Sand as a legendary after that move. | 15-ft. radius difficult terrain; DC 19 Str or restrained (escape DC 19) | 5-ft. radius; DC 16 Str or restrained (escape DC 16) | Cannot use Swallowing Sand |
| Aegis (iron) | Left thigh. Flashes when a B/P/S hit on her body is reduced to 0 by immunity (not when a gem is struck). | Immune to nonmagical B/P/S; AC 22 | Resistant to B/P/S (magical or not); AC 20 | No immunity or resistance to B/P/S; AC 17 |
Level 2 — Altar Riddles
Six bronze-plaqued platforms are in play. Five can yield a letter of Ἀθηνᾶ (Α, θ, η, ν, ᾶ); one is a decoy (Ω). History or Religion DC 14 with 3+ real letters: “This is a name of the grey-eyed goddess.”
Put six of these fourteen plaques on the required platforms. Leftover Level 2 riddles can be extra platforms (no letter, or a red herring Μ / Ξ) if you want to spread the party. Solving the riddle names the deed; they still have to perform the activation.
| Riddle (read aloud) | Answer | Activation (action) |
|---|---|---|
| "Tall I am young, Short I am old, While with life I glow, Wind is my foe." |
Candle | Touch the plaque with a lit candle, torch, lamp, or any fire (1 point of fire damage is enough). |
| "Born black as night, Next red with heat, Then cold and white, My life's complete." |
Coal | Touch with coal or a burnt ember, or deal 1 point of fire damage / a fire spell. |
| "I speak without a mouth, hear without ears, I answer all without fear." |
Echo | Call, clap, or play a note so the cave answers; Performance DC 13; or any thunder damage. |
| "Line up my friends, I'll beat them all I batter each upon its head If I strike true, I build up walls If not, my claw will raise the dead" |
Hammer | Strike with a hammer, maul, or club; pommel or shield bash; any bludgeoning; or Strength DC 13 heave. |
| "Cut me once, I do not bleed I've crooked teeth but no mouth to feed I can be chained yet set you free Knowing all that, what can I be?" |
Key | Any key in the hole, thieves' tools, knock, or Dexterity DC 15 improvised pick. |
| "In the form of fork or sheet, I hit the ground. And if you wait a heartbeat, You can hear my roaring sound." |
Lightning | Deal lightning damage, cast a lightning cantrip or spell, or catch a storm-flash through the roof-crack. |
| "If you drop me, I'm sure to crack. Give me a smile, and I'll always smile back." |
Mirror / Reflection | Bounce sunlight, light, or daylight off a polished shield, blade, or mirror onto the plaque. A torch alone is not enough unless reflected. |
| "Though I'm tender, I'm not to be eaten. Though fresh mint, Nor your breath to sweeten." |
Money / Coins | Place 1+ gp (consumed), or Persuasion/Deception DC 15 as an “offering.” |
| "Passed from father to son, And shared between brothers. Its importance is unquestioned, Though it is used more by others." |
Name | Speak your true name + “I am mortal,” or History/Religion DC 16 reciting an epithet of the grey-eyed patron (Pallas, Grey-Eyed, Tritogeneia — naming her fails if the party has not yet solved the word). An alias fails. |
| "When someone's solved my name, I know defeat, Until that moment, though, I have them beat." |
Riddle | Pose a riddle to the stone — any unused riddle from this session, or Intelligence/Performance DC 13 to invent one. Naming the answer is not the activation; the stone wants a riddle performed. |
| "Each morning, I appear to lie at your feet; all day, I follow no matter how fast you run, yet I nearly perish in the midday sun." |
Shadow | Cast a shadow onto the plaque (stand in a beam, hold light behind a body, or cover a lantern). The shadow must touch the face. |
| "The instant my name is spoken I am broken." |
Silence | Touch and spend a full turn with no speech or action (Dodge OK), or cast silence, or Stealth DC 16 while touching. |
| "I am the one eye no lid covers. The helmsman trusts me further than any oracle. Each evening I drown in the western sea." |
Sun | Sunlight through the roof-crack, daylight, light held on the face, or Religion DC 15 (Helios/Apollo). |
| "When you mourn, I mourn along A watchful eye guards my Vault Laughter or pain, I join in throngs Not of the sea, but still drops of salt" |
Tears | A willing tear on the stone, a drop of salt water, or a PC who is frightened, charmed, or openly grieving touching the plaque. |
Level 3 — Combat Riddles
Savano poses these at the end of the round. One reaction, one voice. Cycle or pick. Hints use the Enc. 3 Great Sphinx row on Riddle Hints (and spend an action, not the answering reaction).
| # | Riddle | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | "We plunder every flower and leave each unharmed. We raise a city of six-sided rooms and pay tribute in gold that needs no forge." | Bee |
| 2 | "I twist the letters, hide the word, Only the clever may be heard. Spies and rogues rely on me, What am I in secrecy?" | Cipher |
| 3 | "Two brothers were born of Night. One lends what the other keeps. I rehearse your death nightly; my brother comes once." | Dreams / Sleep — “Death” is wrong and she enjoys saying so |
| 4 | "A thousand soldiers guard this golden hoard, Each with a single sword; There's just one door, so theft is quite a feat, But the reward is sweet." | Honey |
| 5 | "I am carried by all, yet held by none. Lose me once, and I am gone." | Life |
| 6 | "For many it is daily fare, This drink that no man can prepare." | Milk |
| 7 | "I have a blade that has never drawn blood Thirty of my brothers keep time with me I wound the sea, and the sea forgets the wound." | Oar |
| 8 | "Silver, brass, bronze, gold. Given, bought, stolen, sold. Symbols of wealth, power, or love. Forged like a sword, fits like a glove." | Ring |
| 9 | "Empty, I am a rag. Filled, I carry a hundred men faster than a horse. I starve when the air holds still." | Sail |

The Seal
When a PC shouts the correct six-letter name (Athena / Ἀθηνᾶ) and is heard:
- The rear wall splits. The Seal sits in the compartment — an owl-stamped bronze disc, warm to the touch. Retrieving it is an action.
- Savano does not stand down. Every armor-gem knits shut (54 HP, Intact) and burns white-hot. She still has every option.
- A seventh altar — bare marble, no plaque — rises in the center of the sand orchestra (difficult terrain). It has no riddle.
- She grins. Use the seal-phase line from Dialogue Suggestions.
Alternate Ending — Seal Presented to Savano
If the party solves the word puzzle quickly, fetches the Seal, and presents it to Savano (action) instead of placing it on the central altar:
- Every remaining armor-gem shatters instantly.
- Replace her stat block with Savano, Broken Form (CR 13) — a fair fight for 6×L11.
- At 0 HP she does not die. She stumbles, recites an incantation that activates the Seal, light fills the cave, Athena arrives, heals Savano, and Savano becomes friendly.
- Run the Epilogue as normal.
Resolution
Epilogue — Old Friends
The seal clicks onto the marble. Light like a spear-point fills the cave. Athena is simply there — helm under one arm, grey eyes amused, the owl-stamp on the disc matching the one on her gorget. Savano drops to her belly in the sand as if the last four centuries were a long joke she has finally been allowed to finish.
"Little owl," says the sphinx, voice suddenly small for a dragon-sized throat. "You are late. I have been entertaining."
Athena's mouth twitches. "You have been napping on my house, Savano. And teaching Thebes to be afraid of a door I left unlocked." She sets two fingers on the sphinx's brow, between the dark sockets where the red gem had been. "Did they play well?"
"They fetched the password. They fetched the gift. They even broke my jewelry, which I have been meaning to replace." Savano rumbles, not a threat — a purr with gravel in it. "Gods and monsters are not supposed to take tea. I have missed our arguments."
"Then we will argue," Athena says. "Quietly. This temple was always ours." She looks at the party as if grading a tablet. "You brought a monster her favorite guest, and a city its road. That is wisdom enough for one afternoon."
— Athena and Savano, who have been meeting in secret here since before the Seven Gates were countedThe sphinx is sated. She never wanted mortal flesh; she wanted a problem worth her mind. Athena thanks the party and grants her blessing: each PC gains inspiration, and once before the next dawn may reroll a failed Intelligence or Wisdom check (the grey-eyed one's nod). Savano curls on the temple floor. She is not ready for the stone sleep — not tonight, with company in the room — but she agrees to leave Thebes alone.
Then she stands, fills her lungs, and looses a roar that will be heard in the agora: wounded, furious, theatrical. Telepathy slides under it, dry as dust. Children. Off my mountain. Mother is done playing, and she has company. Wingbeats scatter down the Phikion road. The brood flees.
Back inside the Seven Gates the party is met as heroes. Nikias pays in full (1,200 gp) with both remaining fingers and does not ask too many questions about gods in caves. The council opens the North Gate road. That night the agora lays a banquet — wine, olives, a whole goat, and more speeches than anyone needs.
"What's brown and sticky?"
He waits. Someone will guess. He beams.
"…A stick!"
A psychic groan rolls down from the mountain, felt behind the eyes, utterly done. "Maybe I'll just eat that guy, and then head back to bed."

Reward Cards
Post-session keepables. Reward is the first tag. Mechanics below are for ongoing use after this oneshot.
Clay Tablet of Savano
Reward · Wondrous · 1/Long Rest
Mechanics. Once per long rest, after you hear a creature speak a statement within the last minute, you can use a reaction to know whether that statement was a deliberate lie (as Savano's Blessing of the Sphinx). Additionally, while holding the tablet you have advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) checks made to solve riddles, cyphers, or symbolic puzzles.
Appearance. A palm-sized sun-baked clay tile etched with Fibonacci notches and a single golden paw-print.
Lore. Savano carved a mortal's name into this tablet on Phikion before returning to sleep, leaving a scrap of sphinx-judgment behind.
Quote. "I have waited long enough for someone interesting. Let us see if you qualify." — Savano
Earn when: Put Savano back to sleep by speaking Athena's name and claiming the temple's seal.
