Phaethon's Reins
A level 11 aerial control mission on a runaway sun-chariot.
📜 Session Summary
| Style High-speed aerial disaster with mythic vehicles, rescue choices, and divine restraint. |
| Win Condition Board and control the sun-chariot, spare Phaethon if possible, and turn the blaze away from all three cities. |
| Loss Condition The chariot crosses the third city uncontrolled, Helios is blamed for mortal ruin, and the sky-road remains cracked. |
| Players 6 × Level 11 · 3–3.5 hrs · 3 encounters |
| Key Ally Aello, Wind-Harness Rider (recruit Enc. Encounter 1 or 2) · Maguffin: Spare Golden Rein |
Description
Heliope, Singed Dawn-Priest hooks the party. Maguffin Spare Golden Rein pays off in the finale against Runaway Sun-Chariot. Recruit Aello, Wind-Harness Rider along the way.
Seize control of a runaway sun-chariot before it scorches three mortal cities.
Major Beats
- The first city shows the cost of pride in roofs, wells, and frightened children.
- Aello offers discipline where the myth offers only speed.
- Phaethon is terrified, not malicious, and can still answer to his name.
- The chariot is won by shared control, not by slaying the sun.

Encounter 1 — First City in the Heat-Haze
Overview
The party launches from a smoking temple as the chariot's first pass buckles rooftops and sends winged messengers spiraling down.
🗺 Terrain
Temple roof, bell towers, hot updraft columns, burning market awnings.
Mechanics
- Non-combat path: rescue civilians and stabilize launch points with 5 successes before 3 failures.
- Use the Golden Rein as an anchor line for one falling creature or mount.
- Recruit Aello by saving her pegasi team or following her aerial signals.
- Each rescue success banks a cooling token usable in Encounter 3.
Creature Cards
Heliope, Singed Dawn-Priest
Medium Humanoid (human), neutral good quest giver
Motivation. Keep Helios's name from becoming a curse by saving the cities before divine punishment becomes inevitable.
Secret. She helped Phaethon reach the stables because she believed a mortal hand could prove worthy.
Hard rule. She forbids killing Helios's son as the plan; control the chariot, do not murder the problem.
Spare Golden Rein
Wondrous Item (maguffin), Unique
Appearance: A sun-warm cord of braided gold, too light to fall and too bright to stare at directly.
Handout. "One hand guides pride. Two hands guide terror. Three true names guide the fire home."
Enc. 1–2. Can anchor a flying mount, skyhook, or falling PC; advantage on one aerial Athletics, Acrobatics, or Animal Handling check.
Enc. 3. Looped through the chariot yoke with three city names spoken aloud, it permits the final control contest and prevents a city-scorch.
Aello, Wind-Harness Rider
Medium Humanoid, Neutral · Recruitable Ally · Aerial pilot and rescue spotter
AC 16 | HP 72 | Speed 30 ft.
Role: Aerial pilot and rescue spotter
RECRUITMENT (Enc. Encounter 1 or 2). Save her crashed pegasi team, accept her chain of command in the air, or promise to rescue Phaethon rather than shoot him down.
Aid. Acts on party initiative when recruited; prefers nonlethal when asked.
Strike. Storm javelin +8 to hit, 120 ft., 2d6+4 piercing plus 2d6 lightning.
Solar Spark Swarm
Medium Creature · CR 4 · Burning debris and living embers
AC 15 | HP 66 | Speed 30 ft.
Note. Cold, shade, or prayer to dawn disperses a swarm without killing it.
Attack. Flare lash +7 to hit, 3d6 fire; ignites unattended objects.
Encounter 2 — Between the Second Smoke and the Sea
Overview
The chase crosses a shattered sky-road where winds, predators, and falling bronze signs threaten to peel the party away before they can board.
🗺 Terrain
Cloud causeway, sunbeam rails, storm gap, drifting wreckage.
Mechanics
- Non-combat path: navigate, signal, and leap across the sky-road with group checks.
- Driving off vultures without delay preserves one city token from overheating.
- Talking Phaethon down through the glare grants advantage on the first control check.
- A failed boarding attempt separates one PC onto a wheel-sponson hazard.

Encounter 3 — Hands on the Burning Yoke
Overview
The party fights heat, momentum, and panicked divine horses on the chariot itself while the third city rises directly ahead.
🗺 Terrain
Sun-chariot deck, four yoke stations, wheel rims, loose flame pennants.
Mechanics
- Hard fight: each round choose between damage control, yoke control, or saving a falling ally.
- Maguffin payoff: thread the Golden Rein and speak all three city names to unlock final control.
- Do not kill Helios or make destroying the chariot the win condition.
- Three accumulated control successes before three scorch failures saves every city.
