Description
The huntress-priestess Phaedra finds the party in a tavern and presses a scroll fragment into a player's hand before she has even sat down. Theron Amorphos, a disgraced alchemist-scholar, is two days from completing his Chrysalid Crucible — an ancient apparatus reactivated with twenty years of obsessive work. When it fires, the essences of all magical beasts within one hundred miles will be pulled toward a forced convergence. Theron believes this is perfection. Phaedra believes it will unmake the natural world. The party must cross his clifftop stables, thread through his ruined garden, and descend into his underground sanctum to destroy the Crucible and end his work — permanently, if they can manage it.
Phaedra hands this to a party member as she sits down. It is a fragment cut from a larger document — old papyrus, bronze ink, torn at both ends. She says only: "From one of his early papers. He published it himself. He thought it was about the animals."
Act 1: Griffins and pegasi wear iron sigil discs knotted to leather collars. Players who have read the scroll recognize the discs immediately. Without scroll: DC 16 Sleight of Hand to remove a collar silently; DC 14 Animal Handling to calm a freed creature. With scroll: DC 12 Sleight of Hand; DC 10 Animal Handling. Pegasi respond especially well — DC 8 to calm after collar removal.
Act 2: Each patrol creature bears an embedded iron sigil (fused to a horn base, neck-ridge, or claw joint). Players who know about sigils can spend an Action adjacent to the creature to break it (DC 13 Athletics or Arcana, DC 9 with scroll), releasing the creature from control and counting as an automatic success in that skill challenge zone. Without scroll: DC 17 Arcana to identify the purpose; DC 15 to break.
Act 3: Every creature Theron summons emerges from its vat bearing a glowing bronze sigil. Players with the scroll recognize it immediately — no Arcana check needed. In Phase 2, a sigil appears on Theron's chest during transformation. Breaking it disrupts his magic (see Phase 2). Without the scroll, players must make DC 15 Arcana to identify the Phase 2 sigil's location and function.
Key NPCs
Phaedra
Phaedra · Quest Giver · Neutral Good — An elder huntress in service to Artemis's temple. Sun-dark, grey-haired, economical in speech. She has been tracking the wrongness in the region's creatures for two seasons: migrating where they shouldn't, pairing with species they never would, gathering near the ruins. She does not go herself — her knees are bad, and she respects what she cannot fight. She pays well and in full.
Theron Amorphos
Theron Amorphos · Antagonist · Lawful Evil — Gaunt, middle-aged, white-edged hair. His robes bear twenty years of alchemical stains. He speaks in precise, measured sentences and does not raise his voice. He has dedicated his life to the belief that the separation of living creatures into distinct species is a flaw in the divine order, and that the Crucible will correct it. He is not wrong that something is unraveling in the natural world. He is catastrophically wrong about the remedy.
Kreon the Yoke-Bearer
Kreon the Yoke-Bearer · Henchman · Lawful Neutral — A thick man with bull horns growing from his temples and hands too wide to fully close. He volunteered for partial transformation eleven years ago to better manage Theron's beasts — he was a horse-breaker before. Loyal and methodical, not cruel for its own sake. He will not surrender, but he can be spoken to. If the party treats the animals with obvious respect, he hesitates before fighting.
Thessaly
Thessaly · Optional Rescue · Neutral Good — A young naturalist who came to investigate the creature strangeness and was caught. Locked in a ruined pen in Act 2. She knows about Theron's contingency vial. If freed, she assists in Act 3 and corroborates the Codex's warnings.

Major Beats
- The Tavern Meeting. Phaedra delivers the scroll, the contract, and a rough sketch-map of the facility. Investigation DC 13: Theron published acclaimed taxonomy papers. DC 17: expelled from the Academy for experimenting on sentient subjects. DC 20: officially declared dead twelve years ago.
- The Celestial Stables. Clifftop limestone stables. Kreon the Yoke-Bearer manages griffins and pegasi in iron sigil collars. Combat is available but avoidable — clever parties can charm, deceive, or stealth their way to freeing the creatures as future allies without spending major resources.
- The Broken Garden. A ruined stone garden between the stables and the lab entrance below. Three conglomerate beasts patrol. Skill challenge to cross — or combat if they fail. A hidden cache near the entrance holds Theron's Research Codex and supplies. Optional: rescue Thessaly from a locked pen.
- The Chrysalid Sanctum. Ancient underground laboratory. The Crucible pulses at center. Theron is on his elevated platform; henchmen present. Phase 1: squishy summoner, summons creatures from vats. Something triggers Phase 2 — he transforms into a large Minotaur form and becomes the primary threat.
- Resolution. Crucible destroyed. Theron dead, subdued, or escaped. Phaedra arrives within hours. The creatures gradually settle. If Theron lived: he is without his lab but not without his knowledge.
Act 1 — The Celestial Stables
Carved into the face of a limestone cliff an hour's walk from the ruins, Theron's stables are a series of open-front stone pens and rope-gated bays exposed to open sky. Knotted bridle lines, hanging bronze oil lamps, and the smell of old alchemical salve. Kreon the Yoke-Bearer moves between the pens with quiet competence. The animals are restless — the Crucible's deep resonance has been building for days and they feel it.
Encounter 1 — "The Celestial Stables"
Overview
- Stabled (not initially hostile): 3× Griffin · 2× Pegasus — all wearing iron sigil collars.
- Combat is avoidable — see Non-Combat Options below.
Creatures
- 1× Kreon the Yoke-Bearer (CR 4 · 1,100 XP)
- 2× Harpy (CR 3 · 700 XP each) — perched on the cliff face, 20ft elevation
- 2× Minotaur Guard (CR 3 · 700 XP each) — patrolling between pen rows
🗺 Terrain & Features
Clifftop Limestone Stables — 90ft × 60ft (cliff wall north, 40ft drop south)
- Stone pens (half cover)
- Rope-gated bays
- Overhead bridle lines
- Central stone trough
- Bronze oil lamps in pens (bright light 10ft)
Mechanics
- Path A — Deception & Social: Claim to be inspectors, traders, or bring word of an emergency (DC 14 Deception/Persuasion) — both Minotaurs leave to investigate (Harpies need a separate DC 17 Deception). Talking to Kreon (DC 16 Persuasion, DC 13 if the party shows obvious care for the animals) buys 10 minutes and doesn't remove him, but delays him. A charmed Kreon releases the creatures voluntarily — the cleanest outcome. If handled without combat, Kreon mentions Theron's contingency vial (foreshadowing Phase 2).
- Path B — Stealth: DC 12 Perception to find the patrol gap, then DC 13 Group Stealth to slip through (on failure, a Minotaur raises the alarm but Harpies don't sing until Round 2). Silent collar removal: DC 12 Sleight of Hand with scroll knowledge, DC 16 without. A full silent release of all 5 creatures requires 3 successes before 2 failures.
- Path C — Distraction & Environment: Cutting a feed supply rope (DC 10 Athletics or any slashing attack) occupies Kreon and both Minotaurs for 1d4+1 rounds and drops collar-removal DCs by 4 during that window. Minor Illusion or a thrown distraction draws Minotaur attention (DC 12 Deception; Kreon needs DC 17 separately). Provoking a pen squabble (DC 14 Animal Handling) occupies one Minotaur and Kreon for 2 rounds but risks a 1-in-6 aggro chance.
- Harpy Luring Song: Both Harpies begin singing at the start of Round 2. Humanoids within 300ft make DC 11 WIS saves each round or are Charmed — charmed creatures must use their movement to approach the nearest Harpy. A creature reaching the cliff edge must succeed on a DC 12 WIS save or step off (4d6 fall).
- Kreon — Collar Command (BA): As a Bonus Action, Kreon directs one collared creature within 60ft to attack a target of his choice. The creature makes a DC 13 WIS save or complies. Ends if Kreon is Incapacitated — at which point all sigil collars go slack.
- Creature Aggro: If a stabled creature takes damage, or if a thunder/explosion effect goes off near the pens, roll d6 at the start of each agitated creature's next turn: 1–2 = breaks free, roll again (1–3 targets nearest party member; 4–6 targets nearest guard); 3–6 = strains but holds, no action yet. A creature that has already had its collar removed cannot aggro.
- Releasing creatures during combat: Adjacent, Action. Requires removing or smashing the sigil collar first (see Sigil Mechanic table below), then calming the creature separately.
Each Griffin and Pegasus wears an iron sigil disc knotted to a leather collar with braided cord. Removing or smashing the disc releases Theron's control. The creature is still a wild animal and must be separately calmed before becoming cooperative.
| Action | Without Scroll | With Scroll |
|---|---|---|
| Remove collar (untie knots; adjacent, Action in combat / ~30 sec out) | DC 16 Sleight of Hand | DC 12 Sleight of Hand |
| Smash sigil disc (adjacent; attack AC 11, 5 HP, or DC 13 STR) | No scroll benefit — physical action | No change (louder — risk Harpy attention) |
| Calm freed creature (collar removed; adjacent, Action) | DC 14 Animal Handling | DC 10 Animal Handling |
| Recruit freed creature as Ally (must be calm first) | DC 16 Animal Handling | DC 12 Animal Handling |
| Pegasi specifically (respond to freedom with unusual grace) | DC 14 to calm / DC 16 to recruit | DC 8 to calm / DC 10 to recruit |
| Kreon incapacitated (all collars go slack) | Remove collar: Free Action · Calm: DC 10 · Recruit: DC 10 — all creatures | |
Creature Cards
Kreon the Yoke-Bearer
Medium Humanoid (Partially Transformed Human) · Lawful Neutral · CR 4 (1,100 XP)
AC 15 (Hide Armor + Thickened Hide) · HP 80 (10d8 + 40) · Speed 30 ft · Senses Passive Perception 13
Saving Throws STR +6, CON +6
Skills Animal Handling +5, Athletics +6, Perception +3
Collar Command. Creatures wearing sigil collars within 60ft of Kreon cannot willingly attack him while he is conscious. When Kreon is Incapacitated or drops to 0 HP, all sigil collars in the stable immediately go slack — removing them becomes a Free Action, and calming / recruiting any freed creature requires only DC 10 Animal Handling.
Bull's Grit. When Kreon takes damage, he may make a DC 12 CON save. On a success, he reduces the damage by 5 (minimum 0). He may use this ability twice per round.
Multiattack. Two Barbed Whip attacks, or one Barbed Whip and one Chain Snare.
Barbed Whip. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft. Hit: 9 (2d4+4) slashing + 3 (1d6) piercing.
Chain Snare. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft. Hit: 8 (1d8+4) bludgeoning. Target must succeed on a DC 15 STR save or be Restrained until the end of their next turn.
Collar Command. One collared creature within 60ft must succeed on a DC 13 WIS save or use its reaction to make one attack against a target of Kreon's choice.
Drag. If a creature is Restrained within 10ft of Kreon, he hauls it up to 15ft in a direction of his choice.
Intercept. When a creature within 5ft is targeted by an attack, Kreon redirects that attack to himself. He takes the hit instead.
Harpy
Medium Monstrosity · Chaotic Evil · CR 3 (700 XP)
AC 11 · HP 58 (13d8) · Speed 20 ft, Fly 40 ft · Senses Passive Perception 10
Multiattack. Two Claw attacks.
Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 6 (2d4+1) slashing.
Luring Song. The Harpy sings; each humanoid within 300 ft that can hear must succeed on a DC 11 WIS saving throw or be Charmed. While Charmed, the creature must use its movement each turn to approach the singing Harpy, and cannot take the Dash action. The effect ends if the target takes damage, or if the Harpy stops singing (does not use this bonus action) or is Incapacitated. A creature that succeeds is immune for 24 hours. Up to 3 targets may be affected simultaneously.
Minotaur Guard
Large Monstrosity · Chaotic Evil · CR 3 (700 XP)
AC 14 (Natural Armor) · HP 76 (9d10 + 27) · Speed 40 ft · Senses Darkvision 60 ft · Passive Perception 15
Skills Perception +5
Charge. If the Minotaur moves at least 10 ft straight toward a target and then hits it with a Gore attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 9 (2d8) piercing damage and must succeed on a DC 14 STR saving throw or be pushed 10 ft and knocked Prone.
Labyrinthine Recall. The Minotaur can perfectly recall any path it has traveled.
Multiattack. One Greataxe attack and one Gore attack.
Greataxe. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 17 (2d12+4) slashing.
Gore. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) piercing.
Reckless. Until the start of its next turn, the Minotaur makes all attack rolls with Advantage and all attack rolls against it are also made with Advantage.
Each freed and recruited creature becomes an Aerial Ally. Click a pip to mark it as secured. They appear in Act 3 at the start of Round 2, entering through a collapsed skylight above the main chamber. They act at Initiative 15 as a group. A party member may spend a Free Action on their turn (DC 12 Animal Handling) to direct them; on a failure, they act independently (attack the largest visible threat).
| Allies Freed | Effect in Act 3 |
|---|---|
| 0 | No allies arrive. |
| 1–2 | Arrive Round 2, act independently (attack largest threat). Cannot be reliably directed. |
| 3–4 | Arrive Round 2, full stats, directable (DC 12 Free Action). Griffins can knock a target Prone on a hit (DC 13 STR save per Griffin per encounter). |
| 5 | Arrive Round 1 (they followed the party). Full stats, +4 to attack rolls against Theron or his summoned creatures. Pegasi Inspire one allied creature per round without requiring a direction check. |
Act 2 — The Broken Garden
A broad ruined courtyard opens between the cliff path and the stone staircase that leads underground. Ancient columns stand at irregular intervals — some toppled, some half-buried. Old copper tubing and knotted ropes from abandoned apparatus thread between them, tangled with dry brush and lichen. Three of Theron's conglomerate creatures patrol overlapping routes. They are not clever, but they are attentive to scent, sound, and movement.
Skill Challenge: Crossing the Broken Garden
Goal: 3 successes before 3 failures. Each zone corresponds to one section of the courtyard and one patrol creature. Players describe their approach; the DM calls for a roll. Multiple players may contribute to a single zone's check if the approach warrants it (DM discretion).
A Manticore circles the northern colonnade in slow, regular loops. The fallen columns provide good cover but limited sightlines — timing is everything.
- Group Stealth (DC 13): DC 11 Perception first to identify the patrol gap — on success, the Stealth check is made with Advantage.
- Nature (DC 12): Identify the Manticore is tracking a scent trail and won't deviate. Drop something strongly scented off to one side — it investigates. Automatic success.
- Animal Handling (DC 14): Slow, low approach, averted gaze. One check per 2 players moving together.
- Sigil Break (DC 13 Athletics or Arcana, adjacent, Action; DC 9 with scroll): Creature wanders free, removed from all further encounters. Auto-success for this zone.
A Composite Hippogriff perches atop the tallest column stub in the center of the garden, scanning from above. It rotates its gaze every 1d4 rounds — unpredictable.
- Individual Stealth (DC 14, worst roll applies): Move through its blind spot. On failure it screeches once — counts as a failure but not combat (yet).
- Arcana (DC 13): Emit a counter-frequency to the sigil's resonance hum. The Hippogriff tilts its head and ignores the zone for 2 rounds. Auto-success.
- Performance or Deception (DC 14): Generate a loud distraction on the opposite side. Window lasts 1 round.
- Sigil Break (DC 13 Athletics or Arcana, adjacent; requires DC 14 Stealth or DC 13 Athletics to climb up first): Hippogriff descends, confused, wanders. Auto-success.
A Chimera stands directly in front of the lab entrance staircase, all three heads active: one watches the stairs, one watches the garden, one scents the air. It is not patrolling — it is guarding.
- Group Stealth (DC 15): Disadvantage if more than 3 players move at once — three heads provide near-360° awareness.
- Perception (DC 12) + Athletics (DC 13): Find a narrow collapse in the east wall that bypasses the main entrance entirely.
- Deception (DC 15): Produce a decoy — targeting the goat head specifically reduces DC to 12.
- Sigil Break (DC 14 Athletics or Arcana, adjacent, Action; DC 10 with scroll): The three heads begin arguing with each other. Sits, confused. Auto-success.
Failure Consequences
| Failures | Consequence |
|---|---|
| 1 | One creature becomes alert. Next zone's checks are at Disadvantage. |
| 2 | One creature screeches/roars, alerting the others. Combat begins with the alerted creature. The other two arrive at the start of Round 2. |
| 3 | Full alert. All three engage immediately. Theron's henchmen are also alerted — he begins Act 3 with Specimen Vat A already open. |
Encounter 2 (Optional) — "The Garden Closes In"
Overview
- Any creature whose sigil was broken during the skill challenge does not appear in this combat.
Creatures
- 1× Chimera (CR 6 · 2,300 XP)
- 1× Composite Hippogriff (CR 4 · 1,100 XP)
- 1× Manticore (CR 3 · 700 XP)
🗺 Terrain & Features
Ruined Stone Courtyard — 150ft × 100ft (open sky)
- Fallen columns (difficult terrain
- ¾ cover)
- Dense overgrowth
- Tangled copper pipe runs (difficult terrain)
- Open sky (Hippogriff has height advantage)
Harder: If the Harpies from Act 1 were not killed, one arrives at Round 3 and begins Luring Song on Round 4.

Mechanics
- Chimera begins near the entrance, uses Fire Breath first available action, then falls back on Multiattack.
- Composite Hippogriff stays at altitude (30ft+), dive-attacks Prone targets. Won't descend below 15ft unless the only targets are on the ground and in melee reach.
- Manticore retreats to 100ft immediately and cycles tail spike volleys. Will not approach within 40ft unless cornered or below 30% HP.
- Sigil Breaks in Combat: Breaking an embedded sigil (adjacent, Action, DC 13; DC 9 with scroll) releases the creature. Roll 1d6 each round: 1–3 attacks nearest creature (could be party); 4–6 attacks nearest enemy.

Sigil Bound. Embedded sigil at the base of the goat horn. Breaking it (adjacent, Action: DC 14 Athletics or Arcana; DC 10 with scroll): the three heads begin arguing — the Chimera is no longer coordinated and loses its Multiattack until the start of its next turn, then rolls 1d6/round for targeting.

Multiattack. One Bite and two Claw attacks, OR three Tail Spike attacks.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 7 (1d8+3) piercing.

Tail Spike (×3 per turn maximum). Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 100/200 ft. Hit: 7 (1d8+3) piercing. The Manticore prefers to stay at maximum range.
The Cache — Theron's Supply
Near the base of the lab staircase, behind a loose stone block (DC 12 Perception to find, DC 10 Athletics to shift): a clay amphora sealed with wax and a bronze clasp. DC 11 Thieves' Tools or DC 13 Athletics to open without damaging contents.
- Theron's Research Codex (clay tablets, always present): Requires 1 minute to read. Reveals: (1) Theron carries an emergency Draught of the Labyrinth on his left belt — a contingency transformation vial; (2) the Chrysalid Crucible powers his summoning — destroying it drops his summons and weakens Phase 2; (3) in Phase 2, a sigil appears on his chest — breaking it disrupts his magic. Reading the Codex grants Advantage on the first initiative roll of Encounter 3.
| Item (DM selects 1–2) | Effect | Qty |
|---|---|---|
| Essence Dispersal Vial | One creature within 10ft must make DC 14 WIS save or lose sigil-bound control for 1 round (doesn't permanently break it) | 3 |
| Sigil-Breaking Chisel | Breaks one sigil automatically — no roll required. Single use. | 1–2 |
| Antidote Phial | Cures Poisoned condition; Advantage on next CON save | 3 |
| Alchemical Smoke Pot | Heavy obscurement, 20ft radius, 3 rounds; creatures within have Disadvantage on attack rolls | 2 |
| Healing Potion | 2d4+2 HP | 2 |
DC 15 Perception (or hearing soft movement near the east wall) reveals a ruined stone pen. Thessaly is locked inside; the gate bears an iron sigil (AC 10, 5 HP, or DC 10 Athletics / Thieves' Tools). She knows about the Draught (corroborates the Codex) and will join the party. In Act 3, she uses her action each round to Help one party member's attack or skill check. AC 11, HP 14.
Act 3 — The Chrysalid Sanctum
Thirty feet of stone stairs descend into the earth. The walls are carved limestone — relief carvings of hybrid creatures line both sides, ancient and new intermixed. The air is thick with alchemical salve, lamp oil, and something animal and warm. The main chamber opens at the base: vaulted, lit by dozens of bronze oil lamp brackets and the slow pulse of the Chrysalid Crucible at its center — a massive stone basin filled with luminescent fluid, connected to clay specimen vats by braided rope channels and copper tubing.
Encounter 3 — "Theron, the Unshapen" (Boss)
Overview
- If Act 2 ended in full alert: Vat A is already open — a Composite Hippogriff is already present at the start of combat.
Creatures
- 1× Theron Amorphos — Phase 1: The Summoner (CR 8 · 3,900 XP) — Stone Dais, 20ft elevation (north end)
- 2× Harpy — perched on stone columns (10ft up, one per row)
- 1× Minotaur Guard — base of the dais stairs
🗺 Terrain & Features
Chrysalid Sanctum — 100ft × 80ft, vaulted ceiling 25ft
- South wall entrance — stone stairs (30ft long)
- Collapsed skylight (15ft × 15ft, north-center) — Aerial Ally entry point
- Theron's stone dais — 20ft elevation (north end)
- Chrysalid Crucible — central 15ft basin (AC 14, HP 80)
- 4 Specimen Vats (A–D, AC 13, HP 30 each)
- Stone slab pulley system — 4× 400lb slabs, DC 14 DEX save or 4d10 bludgeoning + Restrained
- Six stone columns (total cover, Medium/Small only)
- Alchemical floor channels (DC 11 DEX save or 1d4 acid)
- Bronze mirror array (6 mirrors — reposition for Blind, destroy 3+ to halve Absorb Essence)
- Oil lamp brackets (fire hazard, 1d6 fire + ongoing 1d6)
Mechanics
- Theron stays on the dais and will not willingly descend. Force him down with Thunderwave, Telekinesis, Dissonant Whispers, or destroy the dais stairs (AC 12, 40 HP — one stair support on each side).
- Absorb Essence (Reaction): When any summoned creature within 30ft drops to 0 HP, Theron regains 2d6+3 HP. Kill him before eliminating summons, or cluster summon kills so he can absorb at most one per round.
- Chrysalid Crucible as priority target: Destroying it (AC 14, HP 80) immediately drops all active summons, prevents further activation, and weakens Phase 2. Theron will use Redirect Beast (Legendary Action) to keep creatures between the party and the Crucible.
- Sigil Recognition: Players with the scroll immediately see the glowing sigil discs on summoned creatures as they emerge from vats. Breaking one (adjacent, Action, DC 13; DC 9 with scroll) releases the creature — roll 1d6/round for target. Theron may use Seal the Sigil (LA, Cost 2) to attempt to rebind it.
- Harpy Luring Song: Both Harpies begin singing Round 2 (DC 11 WIS save). Charmed creatures must move toward the nearest Harpy. Here, the "cliff edge" becomes the Chrysalid Crucible — a charmed creature reaching the basin must succeed on a DC 13 WIS save or step in (3d8 acid damage, immediately ends the charm).
- ⭐ Recommended — The Contingency Draught: When Theron first drops to 0 HP, he uses his Reaction to drink the Draught of the Labyrinth (a stoppered vial on his left belt). On his next turn (Initiative 20, interrupting turn order), he rises transformed with a full new HP pool of 160. Prevention: target the vial (AC 10, 10 HP, attacks at −2), or steal it (DC 17 Sleight of Hand while adjacent). Destroyed before 0 HP: Phase 2 never occurs.
- Option 2 — Loss of Control: When all active summoned creatures die simultaneously in the same round, Theron takes 15 force damage (unavoidable), then transforms at the start of his next turn with a full 160 HP.
- Option 3 — The Crucible Immersion: At 40 HP or below, Theron wades into the Crucible as a bonus action and transforms next turn. If the Crucible is destroyed while he's inside it, Phase 2 begins with only 80 HP and Disadvantage on attacks for 3 rounds.
- Option 4 — The Ritual Timer: After 8 rounds of Phase 1, the background ritual completes. Round 9: Theron is Incapacitated but immune to all damage while transforming. Phase 2 begins Round 10.
- Theron is now the primary threat. Surviving summons act independently on their last orders or by instinct.
- Retained Spellcasting (Bonus Action only): Carries over remaining spell slots — only spells with no fine somatic components (hooves). Suitable: Hold Person, Slow, Misty Step.
- Charge: Move 10ft+ straight then hit with Gore → extra 3d8 piercing + DC 17 STR save or pushed 15ft and Prone.
- Reckless every round without exception — all his attacks and all attacks against him have Advantage.
- Phase 2 Sigil: Glowing sigil on his chest, recognized instantly by scroll-readers. Breaking it (attack AC 13/10 dmg, or DC 15 Arcana) forces a DC 16 WIS save — failure drops concentration and Legendary Actions until his next turn.
- Absorb Essence (modified): Triggers on ANY creature (not just summons) dropping to 0 HP within 30ft — 2d8+5 HP. Halved if Crucible destroyed; halved again (¼ total) if 3+ mirrors destroyed.
- Slab Drop (Legendary Action, Cost 2): Releases a pulley slab — 10ft×10ft, DC 14 DEX save, 4d10 bludgeoning + Restrained (DC 16 STR).
- Behavior: Round 1 Charges nearest party member. Below 60 HP: uses Slow every other round. Below 30 HP: makes his final statement before a last charge or Misty Step escape.
Resolution
- Phaedra's Honesty: If pressed (Insight DC 14 that she's withholding), she admits she commissioned the original field survey of this region's magical beasts — the one Theron used as his baseline data. She did not know what he planned to do with it. She does now.
Freed allies from Act 1 circle the ruin above and descend through the collapsed skylight. They cannot navigate the underground staircase — the skylight is the only entry point.
- Arrive at the start of Round 2 (or Round 1 if 5 were freed). Phase 2 activation also triggers arrival if they haven't appeared yet.
- Act on Initiative 15 as a group. DC 12 Animal Handling (Free Action) to direct; on fail, they target the nearest hostile.
- Griffins: Fly-by attacks only. On a hit, target makes DC 13 STR save or is knocked Prone (once per Griffin per encounter).
- Pegasi: Use their action to Inspire — one allied creature within 30ft gains Advantage on their next attack roll this round.

Contingency Draught. Theron carries the Draught of the Labyrinth on his left belt (AC 10, 10 HP; DC 17 Sleight of Hand to steal while adjacent). When reduced to 0 HP, he uses his Reaction to drink it. He rises at Initiative 20 with full Phase 2 HP. If the vial is destroyed before he reaches 0 HP, Phase 2 does not occur — he dies.
Multiattack. One spell and one Alchemical Strike, OR two spells of 2nd level or lower.
Alchemical Strike. Melee Spell Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) acid damage.
Activate Specimen Vat (Recharge 5–6). Theron remotely unseals one specimen vat in the laboratory. The creature inside begins emerging immediately (most in 0 rounds; Chimera in 2 rounds). Theron does not need line of sight to a vat to activate it.
Alchemical Vial. Throw a vial at a point within 30ft. 10ft radius: DC 15 DEX save, 2d6 acid + Poisoned until end of next turn on failure.
Counterspell. As the spell (expends a spell slot).

Saving Throws STR +10, CON +9, INT +8
Skills Athletics +10, Perception +6
Damage Resistances Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing from non-magical weapons
Charge. If Theron moves at least 10 ft straight toward a target and hits with Gore on the same turn, the target takes an extra 3d8 piercing damage and must succeed on a DC 17 STR save or be pushed 15 ft and knocked Prone.
Reckless. Theron makes all attack rolls with Advantage every round. Attack rolls against him are also made with Advantage. He cannot choose not to use this ability.
Labyrinthine Recall. Theron knows the exact positions of all creatures within 60 ft at all times — he cannot be surprised, and flanking does not grant additional Advantage to attackers beyond the Advantage already granted by Reckless.
Arcane Horns. Once per turn when Theron hits a creature with Gore, that creature must succeed on a DC 16 INT save or lose concentration on any spell they are concentrating on.
Phase 2 Sigil. A glowing iron sigil appears on Theron's chest at the moment of transformation. Players with the scroll recognize it immediately (no check required). Breaking it (adjacent, Action: attack AC 13 for 10 HP while adjacent, or DC 15 Arcana): Theron must make a DC 16 WIS save — on failure, he drops concentration on any active spell and loses all Legendary Actions until the start of his next turn.
Absorb Essence (modified). When any creature within 30 ft drops to 0 HP, Theron regains 2d8+5 HP. This includes party members, summoned creatures, and henchmen. Halved if the Chrysalid Crucible was destroyed. Halved again if 3+ Bronze Mirrors were destroyed (can stack to ¼ total).
Retained Spellcasting (Bonus Action only). Theron carries over remaining spell slots from Phase 1. He can cast spells of 3rd level or lower as a Bonus Action only — spells with no fine somatic components (hooves prevent precision). Suitable: Hold Person, Slow, Misty Step. Unsuitable: Vitriolic Sphere, Counterspell, any spell requiring precise hand movements.

Stone Slab Drop (Cost 2 — uses the pulley system). Theron triggers a rope-and-pulley release. One slab falls on a 10ft × 10ft area he can see. DC 14 DEX save or 4d10 bludgeoning + Restrained (DC 16 STR to escape). 4 slabs total; once dropped they are gone.

Multiattack. One Greataxe attack and one Gore attack, OR two Greataxe attacks.
Greataxe. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 18 (2d12+6) slashing.
Gore. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 15 (2d8+6) piercing. See Charge and Arcane Horns.
Alchemical Hurl (replaces one attack). Throws a vial at a point within 40 ft. 10ft radius: DC 15 DEX save, 3d6 acid + Poisoned until end of next turn on failure.
Absorb Essence. Triggers automatically — see Special Abilities.
Brace. When hit by a melee attack, Theron may use his reaction to halve the damage. Usable once per round.
Gore Strike (Cost 1). One Gore attack.
Alchemical Hurl (Cost 1). As the Action above.
Arcane Roar (Cost 2). All creatures within 30 ft must make a DC 15 WIS save or be Frightened of Theron until the end of their next turn. Frightened creatures cannot willingly move toward him.
Labyrinthine Sprint (Cost 3). Theron moves up to his full speed without provoking opportunity attacks, then makes one Greataxe attack at any point during this movement.
NPC Cards
Elder huntress. Sun-dark, grey-haired, lean and watchful. Two field journals are always visible. She speaks in short sentences and does not comfort when she should be giving information.
- Theron's Chrysalid Crucible will fire within two days.
- The scroll fragment is from one of his early published papers — she found it in the Academy archives. He meant it as a warning about creature-binding in the wild. She has repurposed it.
- The Crucible affects all magical beasts within 100 miles.
She commissioned the original field survey of the region's magical beasts — the data Theron used as his baseline. She didn't know what he planned to do with it. Insight DC 14 to notice she's holding something back.
"He was brilliant. He probably still is. That is the problem."
Gaunt, middle-aged, white-edged hair. Robes stained with twenty years of alchemical work. Methodical in movement. Does not raise his voice. Has been underground for three weeks and shows it.
Thirty years of observation have convinced Theron that the separation of living creatures into distinct species is a flaw in the natural order — that the predation, extinction, and ecological collapse of magical beasts stems from this fragmentation. The Chrysalid Crucible is his solution. He does not consider himself cruel. He considers himself a surgeon.
"You came to stop it. I understand that. But I suspect she didn't tell you what the alternative looks like in another hundred years."
A young scholar with ink-stained fingers and a battered field notebook. She came to investigate the creature strangeness in the region. She was captured when she got too close to the garden. She's scared but not panicked.
- She overheard Theron discussing the contingency vial with Kreon — "the emergency measure, left belt, bronze clasp." This corroborates the Codex.
- She counted the specimen vats: four. She doesn't know what's in D — Theron wouldn't let anyone near it.
- The skylight in the laboratory ceiling is a natural collapse — not designed. It was that way when Theron found the ruins.
AC 11, HP 14. Uses her Action each round to Help one party member — granting Advantage on their next attack roll or skill check.
Animal pen in Act 2. Gate bears an iron sigil: AC 10, 5 HP, or DC 10 Athletics / Thieves' Tools. She's free when the sigil is broken.
