Hecate
Ἑκάτη
Also known as: Of the Three Roads, Torch-Bearer, Queen of Ghosts
God of: crossroads, magic, necromancy, and thresholds between worlds
Patron of: witches and travelers at night
Character
Standing at every crossroads at once, Hecate is the one power old enough to remember the Titans and trusted enough by the Olympians to keep her authority anyway — a torch-bearer for travelers, and a name witches invoke for a reason.
Earning Favor
Hecate favors those who deal honestly at the threshold — travelers who make a genuine offering, practitioners of magic who respect its limits, and anyone who asks a question at a crossroads without pretending they already know the answer. She despises the greedy, who take more than a single honest answer allows.
Notable Relationships
- Parents — the Titans Perses and Asteria
- Notably favored by — Zeus, who let her keep her Titan-era powers after the Olympians' war
- Attendants — restless spirits and hounds that herald her approach
Anecdote
During Demeter's frantic search for the abducted Persephone, it was Hecate — torch in hand, having heard the girl's cries but not seen her taken — who came forward to guide Demeter to the sun-god Helios, the one witness who had seen everything. Afterward, Hecate became Persephone's companion and guide between the world above and the underworld below, the one figure trusted to move between Demeter's grief and Hades's court without allegiance to either.
Emblem & Companions
Twin torches, and keys said to unlock the passages between worlds; often depicted three-formed, facing three directions at once at the crossroads that bear her name.
Real-World Sites
Crossroad shrines throughout Greece, where travelers left food offerings — “Hecate's suppers” — at the dark of the moon; and Aegina, home to one of her most prominent temples.
