Nyx
Νύξ
Also known as: Night Herself, Mother of Evening
God of: night, darkness, and the hours before dawn
Character
Older than the Olympians and unbothered by them, Nyx is night itself given a shape only the boldest myths dare describe — a presence so vast that even Zeus is said to have stepped carefully around her threshold.
Earning Favor
Nyx keeps no cult, hears no prayers, and wants nothing from mortals — which is precisely why she never punishes them. The only way to offend her is to bring false light where she has laid down true dark, and the only way to please her is to leave it alone.
Notable Relationships
- Consort — Erebus (Primordial Darkness)
- Children — Hypnos (Sleep), Thanatos (Death), Moros (Doom), the Keres
- Feared even by — Zeus, who will not enter her halls uninvited
Anecdote
When Hypnos, her son, once agreed to lull Zeus to sleep so Hera could move against Heracles, Zeus woke in a fury and would have hurled Hypnos from Olympus entirely — had Hypnos not fled straight into his mother's arms. Zeus's rage went no further than the border of Nyx's realm. Even the king of the gods knew better than to follow him in.
Real-World Sites
Nyx has no temples in the conventional sense; her cult, where it existed at all, was aniconic — honored in darkness itself rather than at a shrine, most notably at oracular caves used for incubation and dream-rites across the Greek world.
